I believe that small brands actually have the edge in social media over big brands. Granted, the big boys can pay to have lots of folks working social media but the very nature of SM is that it is one-to-one conversation – something big brands have never been good at. Small businesses seem more "real" and therefor more trustworthy.

I agree with you to an extent although I will say I think it's still possible for big brands to induce that one-to-one conversation. What about small business's that have to create that 'brand chatter' as opposed to a larger organization? Do you see this as a challenge or opportunity?
