CALIFORNIA.
The Attorney General has filed a lawsuit against the Monterey County AIDS Project and sixteen individuals, alleging misuse of $2.8 million. The lawsuit alleges that some of the money was used for lavish living and personal expenses.
NEW MEXICO.
A veteran charity under investigation by the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office for falsifying
registration forms is at the center of an emerging political scandal in Virginia and an investigation by the Florida Attorney General.
NEW YORK.
The New York Attorney General’s Office recently announced an “industry-wide” investigation into car donation charities. In connection with the announcement, the AG filed a lawsuit against one charitable organization - Feed the Hungry. However, several other charities indicated in the investigation do not appear to be “car donation organizations,” but rather engage in solicitation for donated vehicles as only one small part of broader and wider-ranging general fundraising activities.
PENNSYLVANIA.
A former state representative will face felony charges in September alleging he misused a nonprofit he founded called The Beaver Initiative For Growth. The nonprofit received state money which prosecutors allege was grossly misused.
Being a non-profit is not easy... and in many cases is more trouble then it's worth!
