selling your software vs. free software (Long Post)

I am having a problem. I have a application in development, called QuicShare. I am having problems with deciding if I should charge a monthly payment (5.99) or offer the software free to users. Even though users can choose to use the software for free (limited app) or pay, I am now afraid that it will scare off users. Some rival sites such as yousendit.com, make users pay up to 10.00 a month for up to 2GB transfer, and they have users download the file through email. My program would be 5.99 a month and users receive the file instantly, without a max size transfer. That is the big difference in the two, and I want to maximize my potential revenue with this product....

By the time Version 2 comes out, my goal is to treat it like a file sharing community with the ability to subscribe to QuicDrives to recieve new files daily, weekly, or monthly.

Below is a small description of the application, the product is in its final stage and looks very good:

    QuicShare
Drag it. Drop it. Share it.

    What is QuicShare?

QuicShare is a peer-to-peer, or direct connection file transfer application. It allows users to transfer files of any type or size without the need of email or websites. QuicShare transfers the files from desktop to desktop with an easy drag and drop icon.

    How does QuicShare work?

    Scenario:

User A wants to send User B a video, which is approximately 3 GB. While holding down the left mouse button, she drags the video into the QuicBox. Once released, a list of files she has just added appears. She has the choice of adding more files, but she chooses not too. Once she has chosen which files to send, her buddy list appears with the list of her friends who also have QuicShare. Once User B is chosen, User B receives a list of files User A is trying to send. If there were multiple files, User B would choose which files she wants to receive. Since there is only file, she chooses to accept and the file transfer has begun. A progress bar will appear on User A’s and User B’s desktop to show how long the transfer will take, speed of transfer, etc. User B can cancel the transfer at anytime. The transfer is complete and User B now has the file on her desktop.

    Benefits of QuicShare

Ease of Use – The idea behind QuicShare is to make the transfer of files between multiple people as easy as it can get. Using our application will not only shorten the amount of time between file transfers, but will save money with our low monthly rates.

Affordable – QuicShare is available for a free trial period of 15 days for users to get a feel of how the program works. After the trial end, users can choose to continue to use a limited version of QuicShare, or make a monthly payment of just $5.99 to register the full version. There are several types of payment options, including Paypal and Google checkout.

No Max Upload/Download – Websites will often limit the max size of an upload or download, but not this program! From 1 MB to 20 GB, from 1 file, to 50 files, this program will send it! There is no max upload/downloads in our registered program!

No Email/Websites – Larger file transfers have turned to an email-based link, which takes up necessary time and doesn’t eliminate user errors (Accidently deleting the email), with QuicShare, you just click the file, drag it to your “box”, and choose who you want to share it with. It’s that easy! No more having to login to a website, find the file(s), upload it to their server and THEN wait until the other person receives the file…just click it, drag it, and share it!

Easy Signup and download – Our signup takes less than a minute, and our download is less than 2 MB. On a standard DSL connection, our download takes < 1 min.

    Features of QuicShare

Buddy List – QuicShare offers a searchable buddy list, for quick sharing possibilities!

Icon mode – QuicShare offers an easy-to-use small icon mode. Just click a file, drag into the icon, select the recipients, and send it! Add a description of the file and send an IM to personalize your transfer! The icon shows up at the bottom left of your screen for easy sending.

Max mode – Adjust the program window size and view your sent/received files, data size sent/received, speed rates, search for friends, chat, and much more!

Security –the file transfers are encrypted with 128 bit SSL security, along with the use of socket connections, through the TCP protocol,

QuicShare Networks – Coming Soon…Subscribe to a QuicShare network to receive your favorite videos, music, and downloads every day, week, bi-week, or month!

QuicDrive – Automate your QuicShare – Add the files you want to be sent every day, week, or month to your QuicDrive, select the recipients, and QuicShare sends your files automatically based on the selected time or event! Saves time and money!

QuicAd – Advertise with QuicShare – Coming Soon…. Advertise within QuicShare…your ads will be shown to QuicShare free users every time a file is sent or received!

...Is there anything that makes my program stand out from the others? Would you make it free to users or charge them, based on rival companies?

How to you think you can make money when offering this software free?
How do you protect people sending viruses or sharing illegal donwloads?

Thats the thing, I would have to market the product in a completely different way if I offer it for free.

The files are ran through a virus scan, like what outlook does.

As far as protecting users from sending illegal downloads, i'm still thinking as to how to fix that problem, but that is the least of my worries. They are not downloading from my site, they are transfering files from peer to peer, so that would be their own descretion.

Anyone want to comment on the illegal downloads? I'm guessing we are talking about MP3's and full length videos?
