I think that it's been overdone. You'll have to keep us posted, though, on whether you're able to convert those hits into sales. Good luck.

The reason why i did put this site together is because i thought that the only reason why milliondollarhomepage worked is because he was able to get the traffic to the site because everyone wanted to see what a 'million dollar homepage' looked like.
So after getting millions of hits, selling the pixels he had was no really that hard purely because of the amount of hits it got.

See i think i can do the same thing with the gallon, people will hit the website because they want to see what/how the worlds most expensive gallon of gas is selling. With gas prices always in the media, if i can get the price to be stupid enough i will be able to piggy back on the constant media attention to gas prices.

The idea of selling the pixels or parts is just another rare form of marketing, if i can get the hits, i think i can get the advertisers.

Well thats my theory, and ill let you know how it goes

    spread the word!haha

I agree the idea has been overdone as well (Moreover, your website actually has nothing to do with gas prices.). While the original idea resulted in milliondollarhomepage's hype, there is no strong reason why milliondollarhomepage's success could be repeated. It does not create a solution to any existing problem per se. Every now and then we see something like this grabbing the media's attention, but I would be surprised to see, for example, another person starting off with a paper clip and eventually getting a house through a series of trading.

You would have to show me an increase in traffic before I invest $100 dollars in a 10x10 pixel square. Seems like a waste of money, but if your traffic improves, it might be worth it. How are you advertising your site?

    Thanks for the feedback people,
I escaped fairy land and have put the price to a way more reasonable price of 20 beans a pop.
Hits are on the increase, and i am about to redo the digg submission as i completely screwed up the first one in terms of marketing it..

If it does take off eventually ill put the price up to probably $50, but till then its 20 big ones!!!

To be honest, I would feel guilty charging people money to be placed on a website that serves no real purpose, besides to make money for yourself.

Not the kind of business I am interested in, there is something to be said about creating a quality product or service that actually benefits the end user or consumer and provides a real value.

So much of this forum is filled by "get rich quick" or "make a quick buck" schemes, that I hardly find myself coming back here. There is a lot of good advice from some very intelligent and talented people here as well. Entrepreneurship comes with thinking outside of the box, and doing something new or better, not trying to scam, or fake it.

I am sure that honesty about the value of the site, and expected traffic is not going to fill up that gas can.

I'd say that this is thinking outside of the box...nobody is forced into buying one of these squares. Interesting idea, you got me to click your link!

From the Million Dollar HomePage entry on Wikipedia:

"The concept quickly spawned hundreds of copycat sites which were greatly encouraged by the sales of a pixel script and by the fact the Million Dollar Homepage was quickly selling out of its last pixels and generating further publicity. Being first, the Million Dollar Homepage became an essentially self marketing tool as a result of its sheer style and novelty. The copycat sites lacked this novelty and most have failed."

If there is sufficient traffic to warrant an advertiser paying to reach this audience, might that serve as a purpose? Especially considering that an advertiser will not pay unless the traffic exists to warrant the pricetag?

But why would people come to your site to see an image sort of resembling a gas canister that is just a wall of ads, that are so small the advertiser can't even get an image across.

For $20 on facebook, you can buy 60,000 ad impressions, on a popular site, target to your audience specifically and get a much larger ad, allowing you to express much more information and much more of a message.

You just cut your price from $100 to $20 without any hesitation, this shows the true value of what you are selling.

It's a gimmick and it has been done.
