selling a niche market on Ebay?

My friend said selling a niche market on Ebay would fail because "people who go on Ebay already know what they want, for example, a specific phone, they just go on Ebay to get a lower price than local stores. People are not going to browse around Ebay so they would never find your product."

I disagree because I'm sure there are people who go on Ebay and look for certain product types but not necessarily a specific product. So as long as my title contains relevant key words and it's in the right category, I'm sure people will find it.

    What do you think?

I don't agree that everyone already knows what they want. A large percentage might, but there is definitely a market for people that might just browse a particular product category, and I would think selling in a niche could benefit from those type of people. I believe more ebayers than your friend realizes are "browsers".

    It's both.

I think the people go ebay to look for their item at a cheaper price.

There are a lot of variables here but I personally had a niche market on ebay and made a killing (a lot more than I did trying to sell the same things in a physical store location.)

With ebay, I just think that if it's cheap and people see it as a bargain, then they would probably purchase it. If your type of niche is high priced, I think you may find a struggle.

It can work. I sell a particular niche in the automotive industry through eBay and use their store as my base. I think it just depends what you're trying to sell.

    Examples:

If it's electronics, then good luck. Because most people really already have in mind what they want and are just looking for the best price.

If it's shemale donkey show porn, then you might have a market. Because I've browsed through there a few times and have seen some pretty wierd stuff. So I guess there is a market for it.

***Sorry for such an extreme example, I'm a bit tired and that's all I could think of right now. Haha.
