Researching A Website Idea

How would I go about researching the market for my website idea? What all do I need to find out before I should put a plan into action, and how do I best find this information out?

I wish to know if there is already a site like mine, Whether or not there is a market for it (though I am fairly sure there is), and a few other things.

Can someone please tell me how I can go about doing this?

:]
Thanks.

I guess the best thing you can do is try to find a web site that has the same/similar idea(search engine). And then considering how it will affect you. By looking at you competition you can find what kind of weaknesses they have and make them the stong part in your idea. (but look at it trough the eyes of the customer). Basic entrepreneur actions - find it, enhance it, sell it.
Hope this helps.

Well I am not sure there is another site like mine, I have looked and cannot find one. Obviously for this reason I'd rather not say what my idea is.

:]
Thanks!

Well then if you see the idea useful for the prospect (trough his eyes) you have discovered a niche. If you know how to realize and put it to action then go for it!

Well I would like to question people about it, but I don't want any to rip off my idea. I am going to ask a few close friends in real life to tell me what they think.

:]
Thanks!

Best thing to do is run your niche idea through the google adwords tool and see what (if any) type of traffic that keyword is getting and how saturated the market for that keyword is.

I just added AdWords to my Google Account, but it still wont let me login. I'm new to the whole webmaster thing. I usually just do the coding.

:]
Thanks!

Heres what I would do.

Go to this link: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

It is a Keyword tool that will tell you how many times a word is searched in google as well as some suggestions for similar keywords. Find the best keyword, or several, that match your concept and search how often they are searched in google.

Then actually google that keyword and look at the top 10 or so sites that come up. Those would be your direct competition in the keyword.

From that you can find out if anyone else is doing what your thinking of or not and take it from there.

Hope this helps.
