Hey Folks,
Great site you have here. Just thought I would run this idea by you all and see what everyone thinks.
My name is Dan, and I'm 23 from New Jersey. I currently write for a newspaper in this area and have experience both in online and print publishing. My idea is to start a regional fishing and boating magazine for New Jersey. There are currently two other magazines that cover this, but both either require a subscription or cost $2.50. Basically, they both started off free, got popular, and switched to a pay publication. It's one of the few periods in local history that we don't have a free fishing magazine and it's a niche I think could be filled nicely.
So far, I have already launched a web site, which will allow me to build some relationships with the local fishing community this summer. The site launched just a week ago, so I'm still getting the kinks out - it's located at Jersey Shore Angler.com (remove the spaces, obviously).
In the next few weeks, I'll have ads in just about every newspaper in NJ advertising the web site on the front pages of their respective fishing sections (which are common around here in newspapers). I'll have my ad in front of approximately 400,000 circulation.
In the fall, just in time for striped bass season, I hope to launch a print magazine. I'd like to start off in one half of the state and test the waters. A few of the newspaper ad people have expressed interest in selling ads for the magazine part time, and I can also advertise on Craigslist to hopefully find a few more people. I also have a local printer who can do magazine print at a pretty good price, with distribution.
Any tips, things to be concerned about, etc. Perhaps someone can offer some advice and let me know how this idea sounds from a business perspective.
