    Question Reginal Social Network Sites?

    Hi guys,
We all heard of success of myspace and other such global sites, but what about regional ones? For example, I live in a small European country where we basically have 2-3 major social sites. Their major flaws are way outdated web design, as well as they are plaid. Like you want to change your skin, pay $1, you want to be invisible - $1, want to search for other members, another dollar, etc.

So basically I got an idea, what if I would make a top noch social site, with user-friendly interface, a video girl-guide, etc. and free ( at least for the time being )... what do you think?

Did anybody have any success or failure with such regional sites?

Setting up the site is the easy part. Getting enough members to make it self sustainable is where you may have difficulty. Local websites can usually do pretty well if you can capture the feel of the region and really get people excited about the site/using the site.

It may work. A problem may be that limiting it to a region may limit growth. However you could possibly always expand to a larger group of people.

You have a point and I like your idea. But the scope of your market will be limited unless you have plans of expanding your network.

You may consider taking much the same route that a few very popular blogs have taken. Some blogs were started in one city - then gained popularity and have branched out to cover others in subsections of the website.

I guess what most people are saying here is - don't place any concrete limits on yourself, allow room for growth and expansion.
