Questions about the Myspace and Facebook boom

    http://www.businessweek.com/technolo...327_215976.htm

How exactly can these sites generate so much revenue?

What does it take to set up a site like Myspace and Facebook? Any heavy expenses?

And lastly, how does these sites create such a buzz? Is it just word of mouth?

Much of it is good PR. You need the guy that is good at social networking.. someone that can find the right connections to get your name into blogs, then newspapers, periodicals, web sites, movies, and ultimately : MTV. All you mainly need is a hosting package that allows for near-unlimited bandwith usage, and that can handle 1million-50million users logged in at once.

The problem is that sites like facebook and myspace is that they are THE facebook and THE myspace and its hard to compete because everyone uses those two primarily.

So myspace isnt just a website owned by a guy in some shoebox apartment? Its actually like a business with a location and staff?

Ahh a hosting package . . . . but ultimately how much is it to maintain a site? Just 20 dollars a month should do it?

    Defiantly has to be different.

Why don't they have a web-cam based Myspace?

MySpace with video- Video Diary, Accomplishments, Video Chat,/ business Showcase: Popular videos(voting system) most informative, funniest, I dare you.., How stupid?..Video Im

What about a myspace for actors, but more personal. Most actor profiles on myspace are fakes. Actors/Actresses would be able to really communicate with their fans through a video diary or something. Seems like they are always hounded by the press, then again they need the press. So maybe coming up with a better medium would be huge.

    Just some thoughts..

    20 bucks a month? :-p Keep wishing.

You would need multiple dedicated servers. Each dedicated server can run you anywhere from 100 bucks to the thousands.

since we are talking about google ads
    what are they?

i always see on sites that have ads that say "Ads by Google"
does that mean google pay you to have their ad on sites? or what is the deal with that ?

Fox Interactive Media now owns MySpace. In fact, I interned for the guy who now runs FIM. Fox is trying to leverage MySpace to help them genterate ad revenue, but at the same time help push all the other things at FOX.

In my opinion the Facebook guy should sell now while he is hot, before they prove that traffic alone doesn't necessarily mean revenue.

I must say traffic and revenue shouldn't even been on the same boat, It seems like it is co-related, but in reality its not

    Quality over Quantity!

Btw, google pay you to put their ads on your page (each time someone clicks on it), hence google ads.

And for TheWorks - to get any revenue from a normal blog, you would really need to have incredible content that everyone wants to read, and ads which completely relate to your readers, and I mean it MUST relate to them. People have "ads phobia" now and its getting increasingly hard to get them to click on things. Everyone is scared to leave the page they are currently on, and if you can't open a new page for the ad, they usually just click "back".

Its kinda like walking on the street and have a gazillion people trying to sell stuff to you or hand you something, you would really rather just get to where you're going and not stop for idle chatting.

Great script, though still buggy, would love to have the chance to use it in the future. =)

There are some my space clones out there.. somewhere, but they suck really badly, doesn't do justice to "Myspace".

also i don't see the hype on myspace, the actual user pages are completely hard to use and poorly designed. Also, I don't see how people (users mainly) can make money or "network" like that, I remember someone writing a thread about how they are professional myspace networker or something, and they wrote an article and such.

Makes no sense to me as I really thought that myspace was just a place to chill,I can't see how its a "powerful tool" to do everything you want.
