    Question about the Wholesale business!

Hi, I am a recent college graduate and have always dreamed of owning a business one day. One biz venture that interests me is wholesale distibutor companies. Companies that deliver goods to supermarkets, convenience stores, delis, restaurants etc. I have been doing research but it is hard to find information on this field. How can I get information on how much goods cost wholesale ?? I tried contacting a few companies for part time work to learn the field but haven't had much luck. Is there anywhere I can go to research the wholesale marketing industry?(how to get started, prices of goods, markups, etc.) Please contact me with any information. Thanks!

    Trade shows, Industrial meetings..

It will be good if you can decide what product range you are looking at..

Those fields are becoming more and more centralized into the hands of a few national consolidaters. They buy local and regional distributors and have the advantage of size when dealing with manufacturers.

The initial inventory would require quite a bit of capital and the returns small.

There are places in any metro area where such distributors congregate. You have NY in your username, there will be several areas in the metro region where you will find them. Easiest way is Yellow Pages or simply start following the trucks heading home at the end of the day.

Most of these are very sophisticated operations and there is little room for a new player.

However, management opportunities are available, I am sure. Just follow the trucks and you're there.

Thanks for all the help! I was thinking about targeting Restaurants/Pizzerias, there are Many in the area where I live and I know many owners. I was thinking of supplying with all products, kind of like a one stop establishment.
PeteVa- When you say they have congregations, are you referring to 'trade shows'? Thanks

No, I am talking about them all being in a common general area. In many cities there is a "Wholesale District", but the distributors have mostly moved out by the Interstates for better transportation times.

Here is a view of Jessup, MD, about half-way between DC and Baltimore. Virtually everything you see there is warehouses and distribution centers. Virtually all are grocery / retail distributors. If it ain't there, they don't make it.

Some will cover from Philadelphia to Richmond / Norfolk / Virginia Beach and possibly the Outer Banks of NC from that location.

May be you should take a look at a online business directory, it will give you a list of all venture companies. You can reach out them for asking to invest in your business with accurate and updated contact details which are available in the sites. Hope this helps for you.

Smile Re: Question about the Wholesale business

I'm really trying to work out if its viable to go ahead and pursue wholesale opportunities at this stage - I feel I must do some wholesale to ever be able to make a full income but I'm not sure I can cope with the extra costs before I'm making extra money.

    Thanks

    Hi there,

You might have to look at the fields that you're interested in the most and then start from that niche to market. Once you have setup a website, establish it by getting to your target audience. Here are your startup tips:

Based on my experience, wholesaler business is not as simple as most people thinks. Usually you have to stock a lot of product. You also have risk of the product doesn't sell. This translate into big capital investment.
