Tom isn't a billionaire. He sold Myspace for $500M of which a decent chunk was due to investors. Needless to say he's wealthy regardless but he certainly is far from being a billionaire.

Having said that, I don't envy them or want to be in their shoes. I love being me

$40,000 is REALLY REALLY too low and certainly will be difficult to compete against the existing giants.

I don't understand why anyone would want to go into social networking site like facebook when the idea is being brought and research by so many people at the moment. There must be something special in your social networking site to be able to lure people away from the norm.

A lot of people on this forum don't know their potential competitors and are running with ideas almost blindly.

Inblurbs has some VERY good points.

From my experience, you're looking at least over a million to take it to a fraction of the capacity of Facebook.

That $1mm+ price tag factors in technology, marketing, research and more importantly relationship management.

Mega sites like aren't in actuality Cinderella stories and success isn't largely due to the technology initially. If you were to emulate facebook, nearly every move you make would be to justify your site to VCs.

VC's then plug in the $5mm+ it takes to truly take it to a Facebook level.

You cant blame a company for wanting to get bigger and better. Who in thir right mind would stand still when everyone in the world knows about you? . As they say complacency is bad for business..at least thats what an Exec of Enron once said. What if Apple still to this day only sold computers?

No, I didn't want to come off as the guy who thinks Facebook is horrible. Its wonderful, really. I re-read my original post and I can see how it may of seemed that way, but I believe I typed it early in the morning (probably after just getting off Facebook, haha) and it was a long rant.

I still feel that it may eventually outgrow itself like the examples I posted before, maybe not though. Who knows? It seems to be the new standard for social networking, but my personal preference was the Facebook of 4+ years ago as compared to the Facebook of today.

As a company, obviously they will continue to grow and implement features that will attract more people, and keep them online longer.

If Facebook plays their cards right I think it will be the Starbucks of the Social Networking scene. By that I mean, trendy, as well as quality, and Mark Zuckerberg needs to remain the CEO.

No one can dethrone Mark from the CEO position if he chooses to stay (at least for now). He controls the majority of the company and can't be outvoted. I know because I am very close in many ways. Having said that, reports came out today announcing that Facebook have an estimated 1300+ employees now.
