    question about product packaging

Hi, I made my own product in China and I want to sell it in the US. I plan to initially sell it to a few stores (they've said they'll accept it). For this, I will need to have a barcode on the packaging. First question is how to apply for one and how long it usually takes to get one. Since I only have one product, I only want one barcode.

Other than the barcode, what other information must I have on the packaging (that the law requires). Is the manufacturing country required or is it optional? Thanks

You will need to apply to get a bar code. I did a quick check of the web, this site should get you started www dot adams1.com/faq.html#getupc

It has the basic info on who to contact and what to do.

    Good luck,

So you've already made a product, found stores to sell the product, and you somehow missed these hugely important details along the way...? Wow.

Seriously though, try Google. It will give you all of the answers you're looking for with something as standard as barcodes - and way more quickly and thoroughly than anybody in this forum.

Come on man. Try to figure things out for yourself... after all, that's what being an entrepreneur is all about!

very easy to get the barcode--if you order qty is large, you can ask the factory to buy the machine-a machine connects with computer and can generate the barcode and print from computer printer.

As for the packing, you'd better metion the following on the ctn (4 sides:front, back, right, left)-taking packing for clothing for example:
    Your company Name:
    Po#:
    Style#:
    Size:
    Color:
    pcs/ctn:
    N.W.:
    G.W.:

You will need to mention the manufacturing country on the product.

Getting a barcode is very easy and takes about 5 mins and can cost as low as $100

Be careful if you intend on selling your product to larger retails chains.

Lots of barcode companies buy large amounts of barcodes and then resell them to you for around $100 no yearly payments, the thing is they will always be the actual owner of the barcode (kind of like leasing it.) Now there are no problems with doing this unless you want your product in stores like Wal-Mart ect, they require you to be the actual owner of the barcode and instead of costing around $100 from memory it cost around $300 and there are yearly subscriptions.

    Good luck with it

If you require more then one barcode I would join with , GS1.
What industry is your product in??
