    Product making

    Hey,

I have a new product that I want to try and get patented, how much will it cost? How do I go about selling the product once I designed and patented it?
Should I listen to design companies and pay the $10000 US fee that they say?

    Thanks

im not sure what the general idea of the product is, im not saying to give the secret away, but what kind of industry is it involved in? who would benefit from it the most?

First it will most likely run you around 18,000 for the patent. Second, try to find someone who knows how to design the product, a friend maybe, sell them part of the company for their services of designing the product. Maybe give them 5% for the design, so they will own 5% of your company. Maybe take them on as a partner, and give them more jobs to do, and they work for "sweat equity" from the company itself. Third, start taking your product to trade shows, flea markets, Like I said I don't know what industry would use it the most, but contact companys that might use the product, and ask to meet with the manager for 10 minutes to demonstrate the product, contact head quarters. If you need more help, let me know.

I costed be about $12,000 for my first patent then another $10,000 for the "continuation in part" which covers major changes. Moreover, it costed me 3 years of my life I can never get back. About $800K from me, investor, and partners time and money.

The whole patent process took about a year each.

I can tell you what not to do. Don't over exposed yourself. I was too aggressive that before I knew it, my competitors took turn making sure I did not enter the market by buying the business I was after(Long story). In my opinion, patent the idea, create a crude prototype on your own or what ever ways to keep it low cost, then partner with someone who is already in the market. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UNDER CUT COMPETORS AND EXPECT TO JUST WALK ON TO THEIR TURF.

My biggest mistake was I partnered with a company that was trying to enter the marker rather than one that is already in the market.

    Why bother getting a patent?

Il give u a quick example. You pay the $20,000 for the patent then u will pay most likley over $200,000 to get the product developed. Now im guessing your piggy bank is looking pretty low and then somebody brings your idea to market. Most likly you cant even afford to buy a coffee let alone sue somebody. Sorry to sound harsh but unless your a big compnay and can afford to defend your patent they are pointless. Plus you have to get them in every country.

My advice is to mayb get a provisonal patent.
Who cares if someone steals your idea if you are a better entrepreneur you will find a way to succeed.

Anyways best of luck with it.

Check out setting up a patent on www.legalzoom.com. I know that is a lot cheaper.
