Preparing for the future - China

What is everyone doing to prepare for the future?

I am learning Chinese. I see many opportunities in the emerging market in China and plan on traveling there this summer. I hope to be fluent by next year. It's really tough, but I know it will pay off and open me up to another land of opportunity.

I'm curious to know if anyone else is learning any languages or if someone plans on doing business somewhere besides their home country. If so, why did you pick that country or language?

I live in China it is a great place but a culture shock for many! as for opportunities, there are many but as with any growing country they start to expand out looking for better ways to expand and grow with inexpensive labor and no tariffs on import and export HINT! As most people already know most business people are already moving on to the next big growing country! as myself in the next year where there are more opportunities. So with that said do not limit your self to just one language although to do business not awlays required to learn the native language when you have inexpensive labor markets and jobs needing to be filled.

Attending classes. Interacting with people I have found to be the best way. It also disciplines me to actually learn.

I'm preparing by building wealth right here in the United States. I think the majority of these 'business people' moving to other countries are already successful business owners looking to invest in real estate, resources and businesses (whether they are buying or building). I wouldn't want to straight up move and start from scratch building wealth in a place I'm unfamiliar with. There is far too much money to be created right here at home.

I think I'm going to get my feet wet with Spanish first. There are also a lot of opportunities in Latin America. After that, perhaps Mandarin.

As a side note, if the opportunities did become too great to pass up, I think I would start acquiring real assets in the target country before permanently moving. Whether you are coming with loads of cash or not, you would already have a minimal passive income to cover your bills in the local currency.

That's great to hear. I am not actually moving over to China, just visiting. Business is global today and by expanding your business to another country that does not mean anyone is "straight up" moving to another country. You make valid points about there being money here, but why stop here? And the people doing business in other countries are all different types of individuals. I know people who have gone to another country, saw a need for something and started a business. It's just about being open to other opportunities.

I agree and I'm glad more people are actually planning for the future and recognize international opportunities as a solution. I just meant the majority of the successful ones I've seen are those who are going with substantial capital. I definitely think it makes sense to expand into other countries. But I guess to me it makes more sense for it to actually be an 'expansion' rather than the beginning.

I've learned spanish, mostly because the latin culture is so similar to the US culture. I think learning Chinese would be a great investment.
