    Poor frame of reference

    I really, REALLY, want to start a business, or perhaps a series of related businesses. However I'm concerned that I don't have a good frame of reference of what it takes to get a successful business off the ground. I've tried a few things with miserable failure that's taught me caution. I don't have a good frame of reference of what it takes to get a business from a business plan to break even paying the entrepreneur's rent. Any suggestions on how to get a frame of reference? I'm thinking more the knowledge base needed and how much things can be bootstrapped rather than time and effort.

    Any help or suggestions?

    It is difficult to give much insight without knowing more about where/what you are struggling with. It sometimes just takes trial and error. Each "Failure" is more importantly a learning experience, now you know what not to do.

    You should consider what other types of business's will benefit or compliment your product/service if you haven't already. You may even find a business or two you can team up with, depending on what you are doing. Do as much research into your industry as possible, having a business plan is a good way to know where you are at now and where you want to go.

    I hope this helps a little bit. I know its difficult to give to much information about your project with out giving up your idea, but the more we know the more we can help.

    You need to try with some competitor analysis or competitor research - check their business model, from where they earn the revenue, what kind of expenses they have and then try to create a company which offers either the same product/service at a cheaper cost or gives an additional benefit to the user along with the usual service. While it is extremely tough to give advise without knowing your background and where you have been stuck before, all I will say is failure is just one of the stepping stones to success. I think all big entrepreneurs have failed a few times initially but never gave up.
