Planning to start an DVD Rental biZ

Any idea like how much DVD's i should have availble at launch.
I was thinking like around 350. How is that? I live in Jamaica, so not much competition.

Like 200 older but classics for a decent base. And the rest like new realeases. I would receive new stock like every Tuesday. (New Realeases). But I dont know how much to carry in. Like 5 DVD's per movies. Dont wanna carry in too much becasue after a couple weeks it just gonna stay there.

Im only 15, 16 on Wednesday, Just Wondering like around how much capital would i need. I plan to work out how many DVD's and other expensives but just wanted to know what you guys thought.

Thankz much.

1 of each of the classics, 3 of the new releases to start would be my suggestion. Depends on the demand you're expecting though.

I would do some research on your target audience and see what they like. Do you live in a retired people town, a college town, etc. Look for what would be most popular genre's and go from there. The amount of movies you start with depends on your town size. Just add up all your costs and add like 15% more for your capital.

Are you talking about a real world rental or online rental biz?

Here in Australia the online rental concept has started to take off, but of course I wouldn't recommend starting an online rental business until first you do some research on Internet user demographics/penetration numbers etc.

The plus of course with an online business is you can run it from your home, no rent, no staff just lots of postage.

I agree with mxer210 about doing research for a real world rental business. Is there any competition out there that you can go and see for ideas? It's grea to see what competitors do that works, what they are lacking and what you can improve on. If there is no competition however don't jump to conclusions as there may be a reason - for example your area may just not be able to support a rental store.

Anyway, good luck with your plans no matter what!

THankz for your input,
Online of course,

There is no possiblity that i could get a store and hire staff etc.
Thats just too much cash plus competetion.
If i do the flix thing.
No late fees, unlimited I could stand out.
Jamaica hasn't really seen it before,
but we dont really have a efficent postal service.
SO i would have to hire a delivery man to ride around and drop of the DVD's.

Dont know if i should a drop out centre or I go back and pick it up.

What you guys think?

Dropping off the DVD's would sure make you stand out. Talk about personalized service.

How big is the area you are wanting to target? Is dropping off the DVD's in person manageable?

Well, Most persons in my neighbourhood dont even know what a DVD is. Literally.

So thats out of the question.
Like, we have so prime location. That is where the target.
I live like a 25min drive from there.

So i can hire a dude to drive around and drop them off.

But the problem is:
Thats our Postal service sucks, so they cant just drop it in a mail box or something.
I have 2 choices:
When they are finished, they call us or go online and tell us from the site, and then we come for it

OR

They just drop it off at a Drop-Off location.

1st: Pro=Convient
Cons: Expensive

2nd: Pro: Cheaper
Cons: People sign up with me, so that they can do eveything from they house. So what is the point it they still have to drive out and drop it off.

Which do you think is better?
Thankz

Three questions come to mind.

The first is how many people have a DVD player in your country? If no one knows what a DVD is, the I assume they do not have a player either.

Secondly, here in Canada most movie rental places make their money from late fees. If you have people drop off the movies to a specific location, you will also be dealing with the late returns. If you only have a small selection of movies, can you afford to have any late returns? How would you continue to rent the movies if they are not returned on time?

And lastly, if people don't know what a DVD is, and I am assuming this also means they don't have a player. Why don't you import the players to sell as part of the business?

Well it sounds like you are looking right past what is actually in front of your eyes, you have mentioned a few times that the postal services is lousy in your area..... do you get what I am hinting at!

Maybe you should start learning about postal services, talk with a few senior people at the post office... and then you could open a reliable post office in your area which you would then feel comfortable enough to start your DVD rental business using YOUR post office.

Just a thought.

Karen,

No no no..
What i meant that the person in my neigbourhood don't know about DVD's.

I basically live near the country,
so my target are persons in the city.

I wanted to do the Netflix thing, NO late Fees. (Trying to stand out)
We have other Rental stores, there is a big one, that has 2 locations. And they each receive like 140 DVD's every week .

The only reason that I am considering the Drop-Off Centre is because I afford to pick them up for each person.

I dont really have all the answers:
Quote:
If you only have a small selection of movies, can you afford to have any late returns? How would you continue to rent the movies if they are not returned on time?
It very hard, because if I buy a good amount but suppose no-one rents.
Or a carry in a small amount and then plenty person come and then are complaining about no DVD's.
Im a little confused.

PS: After brainstorming, im wondering how places like Netflix stay profitable. because they have to buying stock every Tuesday, while person only pay by the month? And they dont even pay that much?

Rory,

Here is a new business idea developed by students in Singapore, an ATM machine that dispenses movies.

Business has been so good they say, that they broke even in two months.

Maybe this is an idea you can do where you are?
