Our New Venture... advertising information/questions

Hey, me and my friend, Nick aka Skatewhale are starting our first venture, DREAM ERA TEEN MAG. and were wondering if anybody advertises in a magazine. Our venture is a teen magazine that is distributed for free, but we want to know how much we should charge people for adverting

-to 2000 teens (the first issue, 10 000 by the 5th issue).

-Our location is Toronto Ontario

This magazine is going to be speading through our highschools first, then eventully go across Toronto. Our first issue is set to come out in Jan. 2006 in the new year.

- please list your estimate on how much we should charge for upcoming issues if we have a READING base of 2000 students

A free magazine means you're going to charge quite a bit to cover your costs and make a profit.

My suggestion would be to look at your competitors rates and use that as a start. Even then 2000 readers isn't alot and you can't really go by normal ad rates, you kinda have to set your own.

Determine how much you need to make to break even. Then decide what your ad:content ratio would be. You could probably determine how much to charge assuming you get X amount of ads/issue.

email me at sarafina04 at hotmail.com since I can't pm. I know 3 magazine publishers in Toronto and I may be of some assistance.

I would have to say $500 an ad (if it's a monthly magazine)... I have done extensive research on magazine ads, and the rate usually boils down to the circulation number (of the magazine). For example (prices based on a once page, full colored advertisement):

PC Gamer (250,000 circulation): $12,700
Computer Game World (300,000 circulation): $15,800
PC Magazine (700,000 circulation): $71,000

(I know they're all computer magazines, but the rates should be similar for other magazines with similar ciruclation rates)

Of course, those are usually high end quotes that the magazine lists, you can usually bargain with them. The average price for an ad (based on the magazines above) is $0.06 per subscriber... Applying that calculation to your subscriber base would be $120 per ad... Then again, as Sara said - you have to add in other costs since your magazine is going to be free.
