Opinions of this idea (Health food store)

I just finished reading a book called "The Abs Diet" and the basic premise of it is how to live a healthy lifestyle. It incorporates the food groups one should eat, as well as how to exercise and stay fit.

An entire chapter was devoted to the main groups of food one should eat; almonds/nuts, beans/legumes, spinach and greens, dairy, oatmeal, eggs, turkey and lean meats, whole grain breads, whey protein, berries, etc.

This is a very rough idea as of right now, and as to my knowledge, there aren't really any stores out there that incorporate all of these things under one roof.

The basic idea is a health food store, that ideally would be located next to (or ideally within) a large gym, such as a new york sports club, ymca, etc.

The store would contain many of the items you may find in a GMC/Vitamin store and also incorporate fresh produce and vegetables, and foods/protein bars that are targeted ideally for people that are into fitness. There would also be a fresh smoothie/protein shake bar. And of course, there would be the items for the health freaks...grass shots, acai/pomegranate (sp?) drinks etc.

As I said, this idea is very rough, just wanted to see if I could get some feedback. Thanks. Mike.

    Feedback

I think you are on to something with this idea. I would definitely look into placing my business around a gym (love that concept). When you begin your research, I would check to see what the gym(s) currently offer as vending, if anything. You also want to find out if there are any other health food stores close by and the convenience of the location you are looking at. When your idea is finalized, I would go and speak with the gym manager about providing discounts to gym members, therefore, you will be feeding each other business. In turn, you can have individuals that shop at your store receive trial memberships to the gym.

    Hope my feedback help.

Health food is a certain type of people. I'd estimate only 25% of the world is into health food. Also it is 2X to 3X more expensive. Like apples 69 cents a pound, for organic it'd be $1.99 a pound.

Also when you open a food store, you have strict health codes to follow, and random check in's for illegal things. Lot of BS in food.

Go for it, I believe the food industry is one of the fastest growing industries today and is considered as a vital part of our economy.

First, you need to plan and at the very least conduct a market research. Planning is essential as you begin to stock up your store. This keeps you from buying items that at first may seem like a good idea until you notice that they’re just gathering dust on the shelves. With adequate planning and research, you will be able determine what you need to buy and how much.

Chamberlains is the best known. Also Publix has a lot of good foods. They have Arnold's high fiber bread. Kashi products. Greenwise items which is a whole area of the store dedicated to that.

    This idea is pretty lame.

I can understand grabbing a protein shake or something similar after a workout. Large gyms already incorporate shakes and energy bars in their internal stores.

Also, if you actually spend the time in the gym productively, I would assume you would be pretty tired to do any further shopping or just would be very bummed to do it.

If I want health foods, I go to Whole Foods.

Perhaps what you can do is work with the personal trainers and provide the groceries for diets that they set up for their clients. After they're done with the workout...they got all their food ready for them from your store.

It isn't lame, just not an ideal market for it. You could sell some stuff, but not enough to stay in business.

Hi, its a great idea, i have alot of experience about healthy living and gym. however, regretably i have to say that most people just dont care or have no time to be commited to "healthy lifestyle". Unless you a product which instantly you can see difference then the market is not big enough. Be prepared to spend lots of £££££ if you do go ahead with this.
