    Online website / blog

Have any of you started a blog and/or an online business of some sort?

How do you make money with the website and/or blog?

What kind of focus does the business have?

Are there better ways to make money than through adsense and amazon referrals?

I run an online graphic design firm, specializing in logo, business cards, and online banner designs. Most of my revenue comes through orders, however a few come from outsourcing printing jobs. I do not have any ads on my website, strictly because I don't find it bringing in enough revenue to be worth the unprofessional look it would give my website.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi volt,

I do tech support in my small business, which right now is a moonlighting endeavor. I've just launched my first ebook on how to backup (that everyone could actually follow). I use a blog and website as my only source of sales and traffic. I keep the blog up to date with relevant stuff of value for my audience so I grow as a trusted resources and thought leader. In waves I promote a product, or my own product, or my coaches/consulting that I do on the blog and with social media, which creates a trickle of interested people and new business. It's still growing, but my audience needs tech advice and I love giving it.

Using a blog or website as your main avenue of traffic TAKES TIME...it's a tree that needs constant watering, but once you have something firm, you are considered a leader in a specific niche, and traffic and sales people residual, you have a fan/follower base, and your making tons of passive and internet income. I'm not by any means buying ferrari's but last months $1800 was OK.

I think having your own product is the best way. I have a few of my own info products which is how I make money. Information blogs are also a good option but the quality of your information will be your biggest challenge. As your blog gain momentum you can monetize with advertising, Adsense or complement it with products you can promote.

I have a few blogs, but revenue is made from the services I offer. Adsense revenue is very minimal. I make more from other sites that want to put a text link on my site for seo reasons than from Adsense.

I run a video game forum/blog - the revenue is minimal, but I'm sure at some point its going to get popular enough to have a good stream of revenue. I'm working on acquiring new sites to help aid the growth and help reverberate traffic.

I make money helping small businesses with their online marketing.

I also have several blog set up to sell affiliate products and CPA offers. Adsense is a way of monitizing your blog/website but there are higher paying programs and methods you can use to make money with your blog/website. I also use my blogs to build my lists which is where your real online money making asset lies. Another great way to make money using your blog is to sell advertising space to other companies, however you can really only do this effectively if you are getting a lot of unique visitors to your website/blog but that is a very easy and very profitable way to make money using blogs/websites, etc

Amazon is great but the commissions percentage is small but they truly are the masters of the upsell so often people will buy several item at once. But there are hundreds of affiliated networks you can join and start promoting their products, try Clickbank, neverblue, clickbooth, markethealth

    I hope this helps

I'd be wary of jumping right into anytype of affiliate blogging or click ad type marketing. If your heart isn't behind your service or product, or blog really...you just end up being "that guy" ... likened to spam bots and all sorts of trickery because all you are after is traffic.

Just a personal recommendation, quality and passion first...the money will consistently roll in if you are behind your website %100 and not just looking for the highest payout...that's what I've learned from those who are living off their website launches.

How do you generate your income, looks rather busy on the site. Your blog needs some design help but at least it's functioning.

You see the ad on the side when you scroll down? Google ads. I used to get only one or two clicks before, but now I'm getting above 3 which is good because my readership is growing. Now all I need is a decent design. Which I don't have the capital for.

    Hey Volterocky,

I think acmair and robgr nail it: ads will make your site look spammy, and it will turn off visitors. I think a much better strategy is to focus your revenues on sales instead. If you actually look at the number of clicks you need to make any real money on adwords, it becomes quite obvious that it's not a great business model (unless your blog has a massive amount of daily traffic). Even affiliate sales will require a large amount of traffic though to make any decent money. Instead, I think you should create a blog or website that provides great information about a particular subject matter, and sells a product that is closely correlated.

I would focus on building a website that sells a product that you have designed; this way, you can take 100% of the profit (instead of the 4 or 5% you'll get as an affiliate selling someone else's product). I would recommend that the site provide value to your customers, and not simply be a 1 page sales pitch website. If your site provides value, and is worth reading, you can eventually turn your readers into customers.
