Hey guys, I'm thinking of moving to California and opening up a hip place by the beach that does jet skis, wakeboarding, surfing, diving, helitours, etc. Kind of a one stop shop for adventure seekers.

I know this sounds like a broad range, but we'd likely start out with 1-2 of these and build from there. Also, I know the expensive stuff like helitours and parasailing can be subcontracted out, so that shouldn't be too difficult to pull off either.

This doesn't seem like a costly business to start up either: all you need to start is a website and some ads, a small leased location and some equipment, which isn't particularly costly as a used jet ski can be had for $5000 or less (say double that for nice ones).

Also, there seems to be a lack of companies doing this properly - I tried several search terms on google, but only pulled up these very poorly designed websites that don't really seem like trustworthy places to rent from at all. Examples:

jet ski la dot com
all day jet ski dot com
h20 craft dot com
ows rentals dot com (best one, but still kinda bad)

I'm thinking that with a good website and some SEO, AdWords, etc, I could pull in some good business. Jet skis seem to rent for about $100/hr on average (less on weekdays; more on weekends), of which probably about $15/hr is fuel, and plus (how much?) insurance, but I'm guessing $60/hr at least is left to the shop.

At that rate, a jet ski only needs to be rented out for about 2.5 hrs / month to pay for it's own lease. Pretty great, huh? That's based on an $7500 used jet ski (there are much cheaper ones) on a 60-mo lease, which is about $150/mo. So everything over 2.5 hrs / month is profit after cost of goods sold.

The lowdown is that a single jet ski, rented out at only 2 hrs / day on average, can bring in $3000/mo. And I bet the places I just listed have at least 3-4 units that are rented out for far more than 2 hrs / day. Sounds like good money, especially when you add wakeboarding, surfing, helitours, etc.

What do you guys think?
