Pick a cause you believe in or has affected you in some way, then start thinking of ways to raise money for it.

For instance, my fiancee's mother was diagnosed with skin cancer late last year, so we're putting on a fun run/walk event in June to raise money for cancer research (www.runfromthesun.ca).

You could even consider a social venture. Instead of just donating or raising money, start a small business that impacts peoples lives by involving them. A business that, instead of creating profit, creates social value.
I'm sure you can google more on this.

Clegg,

Good point, I like the idea of creating a social venture that benefits society but is also self-sustainable. Here's one example in the restaurant industry (although they live off support money, which I think sends the wrong message. They are way too top-heavy).

A non-profit built into a for profit is always a good idea, the terminology is called social responsibility. I have a non-profit that gives back built into the Pacific West Moving foundation. You can see our non-profit at www.we-are-here.org
