Hello. I am a college student. I recently came up with an idea for a website that would honor fallen police officers, firefighters and military personnel who have fallen in the line of duty, which would be created by a collaboration of web designers around the world. We would collect funds through donations and fundraisers on the site for the families of the fallen. The project is entitled “Project Fallen Heroes.”
I found a lawyer who would incorporate the non-profit organization and take care of the legal issues and I could pay for the services when I raised the funds.
Here is my problem. I need to find someone who can file for tax exemption with the IRS. I can not find an accountant who will delay fees long enough or provide a discount.
I am a college student which means I am broke. I am trying to do something good with the project but I cannot afford the cost of filing for tax exemption.
My problem: I figure I can raise funds by contacting businesses for sponsorship, but, will they donate to the project when I am not tax exempt yet, but a registered non-profit? If so, what do I say the 501(c)(3) is pending? If not, what can I do?
Also, do you have any tips/basics for non-profit sponsorship? Who/how to contact? Etc?
Thanks!
Jordan
