Non Linear SEO - This is Pretty Interesting

So I was having a meeting with my staff the other day and we were talking about all the bottlenecks in our SEO Dept. Then one of my staff drew a picture of an idea she had. I think her exact comment was 'what if we stop looking at this as a linear process'. What she meant was how do we take our process and split it into multiple channels so that no one person can slow up any other person. In hind sight this sounds so simple.

So here is what we came up with
Step 1: Content Creation: This is now our foundation assignment
Step 2: We broke this into six parts that operate independently of each other. So once the content is created it is given to the person in charge of each of our six distribution channels.

    Channel 1: Traffic Geyser
    Channel 2: Article Syndication Networks
Channel 3: SEO Curl to Blog Network
    Channel 4: Social Media Syndication
Channel 5: Content to Primary Domain
    Channel 6: Reporting

This new process has cut our production turn around time by what we believe to be 75%! I know there are a few SEO Junkies on YE so I thought I'd share this with you all.

An excellent example of business process improvement. Whenever you can reduce or eliminate dependencies and queuing between functions, you're going to increase the throughput of the process. If I were you, I'd put this together in a swim lane diagram and see if there are any ways to reduce the number of handoffs between functional areas, and therefore reduce the time projects sit and wait for someone to work on them.

While I do internet marketing for my business (among other things!), my day job is in Process Improvement. I've found that many of the techniques used in the Fortune 100 world are just as useful with a small business, and can greatly enhance effectiveness when implemented. In the end, opportunities to make a profit are everywhere - the business with the best processes, though, are the ones that consistently perform the best over time.

Good job Roger. Great insight from your staff. In accordance to the response above I would like to see how Lean, Six Sigma, or maybe the theory of constraints could take this process improvement even further? Good stuff.

Theory of Constraints is an interesting application here. With out doing the typical five focus steps we did apply basic 'choke points' reviews to figure out why we were having to do so much work to get our sites to rank. Now that we've eliminated those constraints we have a much better grasp on our ability to grow. This will be the first month that we use our non-linear approach. It will be interesting to see what the results are. If they are good then we should be ready to sell our services to a few more clients.
