New to business, where do I start?

Hi, everyone I'm new to the forum here. I seen some of the post here and noticed how helpful and friendly everyone was, so I had to join!

So here's my issue. I just recently turned 20 and really want to do something great with my life. I don't want to make close to nothing getting an average Job - I want to work for my self, thus I thought, the entrepreneurial lifestyle fits me best.

However, I don't really know where to start or what to do, I've never done anything like this before! I want to make enough money to get my own car and apartment/house, those are some of my goals; but I just don't know how to get their please help! Also, it would be great to be able to pm someone to update them on my progress and so forth.

Plus, one of the main reasons I want to start making money is so I can help my family and also help Orphans in Africa! So, I definitely have good intentions; help me out please!

What are you interested in/know a lot about? Make a brainstorming list and write everything down. Then weed out the ones you don't have the passion for, and take the remaining ones and do some searching about business' in those categories.

Hi Nick, thanks for your response! Well all I've ever really wanted to do is be a musician, that's my dream really. But however, I know that, that takes a while and it doesn't pay the bills lol.

So I'm just looking for something that I can support my self with and make money.

    Thanks for your help Nick.

Well since you have an interest in music, maybe you can make online videos teaching people how to play certain instruments. Maybe create an online community where musicians can share their thoughts/ideas and learn from one another.

Just a few quick thoughts that came to my mind. The most important thing is doing something that you are passionate about. Set out to do something that you would do even if you weren't getting paid. That's where most people are successful because their passion forces them to create something that others value.

What are your assets and skills? What are the things you are good at. If you are fond of designing, you can be a web designer. If you know how to write, you can work as a writer. etc...

Well I think I'm a good thinker, and problem solver. I'm probably someone who's better with his mind than with his hands. But that's it. I just got no idea what to do, I mean, what would bring me the most success.

If your goal in business is to "make money" you will fail. If your goal is loftier - like helping people to 'whatever' - then you have a chance for success. Find a mentor Find someone you can confide in.

I know exactly where you're coming from, man. I'm 30 and have been struggling since I graduated college to define myself professionally and what I've realized over the years, is that I'm happiest when I'm helping others.

If you're happiest in the music industry - identify what you like best - now what part of the industry does that relate to - how can you improve upon that part of the industry and/or does it need improving - who are the experts - what kind of businesses do they own/how are they making a profit - etc etc.

Pull out a piece of paper and start writing out your thoughts and goals. Good luck!

Sorry for taking so long to reply everyone. Well I'd like to do business offline really, but either way is fine. And my goals are not just to "Make Money" I've already listed the reasons I have to want to make money: which is to help others

So I'm glad you guys understand me. However I recently had an idea on what I can do, tell me what you guys think. I can start my own limousine company. The problems here are 1. Get a limo and 2. Find a driver. After that it should go smoother.

So what do you guys think? Also if not, please contact me on something I can do that is guaranteed to work. Thank you all so much, please don't give up on me!

Sounds like you wanted to start a very expensive business. If you are planning to start a limousine service business then you need to take some steps in order to set up reputed company that is both profitable and efficient in coping with demands of customers. Firstly you should personally inquire about the scope tourism in the area in which you would be going to start this business. If the potential for renting limousine is limited, then there is no point in investing money. Your company should be able to fulfill the requirements of various businessmen and families. Being owner of limousine business requires constant command and patience. A proper business plan is indispensable. This depicts potential investors why they should be interested in investing in your company.

According to my opinion viewing some sample business can be a good technique for seeing how it can be done and sparking ideas on what you need to do for your plan. It is a lot more work than using business plan software, but it's definitely more helpful than trying to write your own plan from scratch.

I think you need a little exposure to the outside business world before starting a business.

You said you are 20, do you work? do you go to school?
