1) First get a website. You can build your own so quick -easy and cheap these days to start. Even one sales page to start is fine. You can get one at Godaddy (Website Tonight) for less than $10 per month and secure the we domain for $10/year.
2) Get the product into the hands of local stores ASAP. Start in the commuity where you grew up and tell them. Use the awe shucks golly approach. Yes, people still love to hear local guy made good.
3) If you're an official company (Corp, LLC etc), tell your local newspaper so than can do a write up - usally an announcement in the Business Section. They're always trying to fill pages.
4) Do a press release. PrWeb is a great company. There are also sites that do free press release. Be sure you have a Buy Button (see PayPal) so people who find you can purchase.

I believe that to get a business up and running successfully, you have to do a combination of the things several of you are saying: advertising and selling. Your advertising has to be very smart at first, being sure not to waste a dime. Many things can be done for free now, even if you're a brick and mortar business. Get involved right away in the Chamber of Commerce in your area. Be evident at fundraisers and work your elevator speech into conversations somehow. Use your kids to pass out flyers. Do co-op advertising with local businesses. Just be a positive role model in the community and you'll earn respect; which goes a long way in business. I think when your business is just getting going is the time you really have to be frugal with any money that you can get your hands on.

I couldn't agree more with this, LOL about the kids passing out flyers, but it is true.

My perspective is that taking action is the key to getting any business going. So many potential entrepreneurs fail because they get stuck in the uncertainty of it all. Which prevents them from making decisions and taking action.

keep those expenses to a minimal, and always scale upwards ( volume-wise )
find shortcuts that would help you effectively advertise to the ppl you want to sell to!

Selling your product or service at the end of the day is key but there are alot of other ways you can save money and feed it back into the business. Working hard and learning all the skills necessary to run the business and minimize overheads such as marketing, finance, HR, PR and R&D!

Definitely advertise. Of course, you have to make sales. But with poor advertising, you'd have to be a super lucky person to make consistent sales. I used to frown at advertising and marketing before because they usually means more money out of my pocket. but 3 months into my business, i realized i am not making any progress and still, i'm losing money (paying the rent, the bills, etc.). so when you make a budget for a business startup, make sure you set aside something for advertising. an effective advertising is the key to making sales and making sales is the key to earning revenue.
why do you think million of blogs are fighting for SERPs, page rank and authority? it's free advertising.

If you are building a product that will take you a few months to make. You could consider selling your services as a "consultant" or as an "outsourcing station". However, it can be hard to balance your product development with this.
A good idea is to get a part-time job outside your business that gives you enough to feed yourself until you have a product to sell.

I think the best way to earn revenue definitely to create the effective marketing plan to sell the product. With more sales, definitely more revenue and profit.

people forget that money saved is a revue resource often overlooked.
sometimes you have to work twice as hard to make half as much money but in the long run the investments pay out multiple times.
