You need to weigh how much you get compared to how much you give. If you get way more than you give then its a good one!

IMO, businesses associated with health would be a good idea because the health industry never declines as it is considered not only as a necessity, but a top priority.

Service based businesses will do the worst as more "do it yourselfers" come out of the woodwork as the recession gets worse. People just won't have the money to pay to hire someone for what they can do themselves. So businesses that deals with providing consumers with neccessities should thrive or at least do much better than any service based business (unless it provides a basic neccessity such as healthcare for an example). The benefit of having a business that provides neccessities is that it has the potential to continue to be profitable if and when the economy improves.
There is a high chance that there will be a stong demand for anything that gets peoples minds off their troubles. Bars, beer distibutors, tobacco stores, and nudie bars should all do well.
Unfortunatley, drug dealers will most likey have lots of business in the years to come as more and more people turn to drug use to escape reality.
Also, businesses that deal in luxury items are going to do very bad as the wealth of the nation continues it's decline.

+1 to the Liqour Store idea. It seems when things get tough, people choose to waste even more money on the things that got them there in the first place.

It's not for everyone, but the Service Industries involved with liquor sales seem to always do well (compared to the business world as a whole) during times of economic doubt or recession.
Nightclubs, Strip clubs, bars, lounges, hookah bars, liquor stores and wine boutiques are examples of ventures that it would make sense to invest in. The only problem is that they are all primarily brick-and-mortar businesses that take a large amount of startup money just to get going.
If you're looking for quick and easy ways to start a business in these industries, it makes sense to partner with existing venues and host shows, arrange performances, and otherwise promote the venue.

With the governments initiative to commit utility companies to provide grants for uk customers for loft and cavity wall Insulation, this is evidently a safer sector to work alongside. I have been fortunate to encounter a compaign which is related and now has brought me to this. In times of recession working in conjuction with the governments plans isnt the worst place to be at the moment. I have recently compiled a blog with all the relevant info.

Foreclosure Short Sale Sellers Assistance is Hot
Interesting,
Since start of this survey, and the fact I focus only on recession proof businesses, the hottest business is my Short-Sale-Cash Foreclosure Prevention through Sellers Assistance Instant Funding Business. Yes, with millions of homes being foreclosed on, and we haven't seen the worse according to the experts, this is the industry to be in for the next few years.
Success to all,

Brewing Beer! No matter how poor anyone is they will still go to the bar and have a beer to get out of "reality" for a couple hours. Beer will NEVER take a hit.

@sbutler31 in the UK the pub trade is taking a hard hit and a fantastic amount of our pubs are closing down everyday mainly due to people being able to buy drinks cheaper from the Supermarket and going over to France for the day and loading up with cheap booze.

Lead generation. Ultimately, companies will still need to generate business at cost effective rates. There are many industries waiting to be exploited...including the much talked about sub-prime financial sector.

Computer repair, since:
1. People w/ broken computers are looking to spend less than it costs to buy a new one.
2. You can gradually grow your business by advertising online at first, then to others in your neighborhood.
3. It's a service business, requiring minimal investment in parts. Specifically focusing on services like virus removal will keep the risk down.
