Affiliate marketing is the way to go. Statistics show that the health & beauty industry has thrived in every economic downturn and even did well in the great depression. Using affiliate marketing to sell health and beauty products is the way to go and markethealth.com will allow you to do just that :-)

    In a recession?

    Repossession company

    Soup kitchens.

Its really not THAT bad out there. People are still spending money just as before, but just less on luxury items like cars, and new appliances. "Well, the ol' Honda does still run, no need for a new one." "Honey, there is nothing wrong with that fridge. We do not need another one, you know how much that will cost?!"

I would have to say marketing would be a good business to get into. With so many new startups and existing companies fighting for business. years ago I started a small marketing company with no knowedge or experience in marketing beyond common sense. I started off hiring lead generators to work telephones for contractors of different types. I then expanded into placing plexiglass brochure and card holders in small local busiensses with a promise of a free dinner, or cake, or dry cleaning whatever that particular business offered if they would have my salesman over for an estimate. I then took it one step further and interviewed the small business owner who hired me and did an inventory of his skills, tools, equipment etc and tried to figure out what he was capable of doing allowing us to expand into different markets. Many people are being forced into entrepreneurship because they got laid off from their jobs and can’t find another one.

Others are choosing entrepreneurship because they are tired of someone else controlling their destiny.

If you were to start a business today given this economic climate, what would it be?

It depends, if it is your first, I'd recommend starting a business within a Network Marketing company. That way, you are able to learn about the process and earn income without huge startup costs.

If you have experience, I'd recommend building a business that installs solar panels. This would be great because solar panels help save people money in the long run, which people see as an added bonus in a recession!

I would say network marketing as well. Historically, Network Marketing has created countless opportunities for creating wealth. It has been predicted that more millionaires will be created in this industry in the next 10 years than any other industry. Network Marketing can be started part-time, in conjunction with whatever you are currently doing. So if you are currently working a full time job, there is no need to give that up to start your Network Marketing career.

During a recession people look for ways to reduce their expenditures.
So areas that would thrive during a recession could be:
    1. repairs
    2. industries that deal with "value" products instead of "premium" products.

However, I disagree with the Education suggestion. It is true that education is on-going, but one must consider that due to a recession a restructuring could take place. If funds are scarce and offers abundant, it is only natural that schools take on teachers that are "cheaper" (substitute teachers) or over-work their existing employees.

I will not post any business suggestions because there are so many businesses that are running in my mind right now and when I say business, it should a changeable but solid based. It should be very flexible and prepared to changes.

Do you know why I am saying this? It is all because there are what we call trends, trends that every businessman should follow and go in front of the trend to consider everyone as your market.

My question is, what do most people / everyone need today? The answer for this question should be your basis in what kind of business you should have.

Wow! Amazing to see this thread still going - certainly speaks volumes.

During a recession, I like any business that can be started affordably - Internet-related, network marketing, etc.
