Need guidance with new gym business opportunity.

    Hello

I work in a gym as a fitness instructor and I have just gained permission to use a room (within the gym). I intend to sell health supplements.

Im just wondering if anyone can give any other ideas on how i can best make use of this room other then just for supplements.

    Thanks

    Hi maorimuscle

I actually know someone who recently purchased the cocktail bar in a la fitness. Here are some notes ive taken from being around

The real business comes from repeat customers. One way he builds that is by coordinating with the gym and offering promotions for new members and such. One they get a taste of what you offer their is a bigger chance they will come back and purchase more.

Another point I would make is, be certain the person behind the desk is aggressive about the business, not some dude who is sitting passively waiting for customers.

Aside from supps, you can sell gloves, gym branded shirts, wrist traps

Yeah our gym has both men and women. The gym that I work at only has about 150 members so I'm not expecting to make a killing out of this gym, however I am trying work a way with my boss to get my supplements into our main gym with 700+ members this is where I can make most money. The supplements I sell are the cheapest in my city too (probably because I don't have the expenses that the Health Shops do).

Thanks for your comments dslackman and stri8ed!

Crazy idea. But if you have your own space/retail cases, etc. You could sell your normal supplements, nutritional bars. But maybe try building your own brand from this? Your own branded shirts, workout material?

    Hey man,
My advice would be to focus on your PT work (not saying you can't sell supplements at the same time). More and more kiwi's are jumping on the gym scene and none of them no what the hell they are doing. I think the best way to go is to have a comprehensive 10 week plan. You know, 1500 calorie meal plan, 2 PT sessions with you and then a list of what to do etc. You can peddle your supplements to them as well. The reason I suggest this is that, me and all my friends just buy our supplements (Horleys) from the supermarket, its convenient and affordable. I travel light when I go to the gym and don't take cash with me

True. That's pretty much the same advice I got from a PT mate from Christchurch. Cheers Matt

Hiya. Yeah it's only a small room. Approximately 7 to 8 metres by about 4 metres. At the moment i'm just using it to store my supplements. I'm also going to put a small fridge in there and sell drinks / refreshments aswell. All I need to do now is somehow sabotage the drink machine we already have at our gym hehe.

I am also looking at mixing up and selling drinks like protein shakes and pre-workout / post workout drinks in the cups similar to the ones you get at McDonalds etc.

    Try something consumable

Think about what will bring your customers in time after time. The key to generating revenue is consumable products. Think smoothies, an exercise class with related products, brainstorm and be creative. Good luck!

    Hi Maorimuscle,

I don't agree with focusing just on the PT side of things. As long as you are needed, you can only make as much money as you can personally bill, i.e. 8-10hrs per day. Having a product range then gives you the opportunity to sell in multiple locations, without neccessarily having to be there - internet is one, but also other gyms/health outlets/ sport shops. Do you make the product yourself, or are you reselling it? Depending on the licensing, think about using the space as a health bar - you can sell fruit smoothies, that disgusting wheat grass stuff, and you can then provide samples of your supplements etc. as well.

I would say to add workout apparel and "as seen on tv" workout products to your product line. Heck, if you have enough room, sell some actually exercise machines but that's sort of like telling your customers that's it's better to workout at home.

Can you also provide one on one fitness and health consulting along with selling the supplements?

Awesome. Yes I intend on doing most of the ideas suggested. I think it does have alot of potential to grow into something much bigger. Yes I intend to do one-to-one consultations aswell and also I am applying to do a diet/nutrition course that should qualify me to write out eating plans etc.
