    Need Business Ideas

This post is mostly for fun, but I want to see if YE has any good ideas for a business.

    Here's a little background information:

My town is home to the largest natural lake in Pennsylvania. It is located in western Pennsylvania. During the summer season, it is heavily populated with people vacationing to the lake area, some from the area spending time in their houses on the lake, and many others from the surrounding area that like to spend the summer away from home, most being residents of Pittsburgh.

An amusement park was built on its shore, but has since ceased operation (2 years ago). On weekends, the lake is covered with hundred of boats, jetskis, and other watercraft.

So this is where I ask you YE, do you have any good ideas for businesses in the area? Preferably involved with, or even on the lake?

I don't spend much time at lakes so I dunno if this is done at all but how about a cafe/restaurant on a boat? Either docked up, cruise round the lake for x amount of time or use a ferry service to get people to/from the cafe-boat.

    My 10 second idea

A fishing guide would be good for you.

Those are both really good ideas! Keep them coming people!

About the fishing guide, unfortunately due to recent attempts to control the seaweed population by putting chemicals in the lake and destroying weed beds, the fishing is no longer that great. And the lake is not actually all that big, about 3 miles long and 1 mile wide

That actual is quite a large lake. If you have a boat, people will pay you like $250.00 to take them out fishing in the boat and show them some of the better spots. Or you can do a fishing + lodge. Where for a 2 day weekend trip they can stay with you and you take them fishing for like $500.00

That's another great idea. The problem is, housing is very limited here. The lake is entirely surrounded by houses except for about 500 yards, which is swamp land. I guess we could commute to the lake though.

Is there good 3G network coverage in the area? If so, you could create an iPhone (or other phone) app to offer localised information services to residents and tourists.

A day tour business @ lake? Like visitors will come and rent a boat to tour the lake.

    Think Outside the Box

This may not have much to do with the water, but if you're in a heavily populated area with hospitals, nursing homes, senior facilities, doctor offices and the like, then I encourage you to consider building a Medical Transportation Company.

This is definitely a recession-proof business that is not subjects to seasonal travel. Further, it doesn't require an overabundant amount of startup capital.

And ironically enough, the medical industry remains the single fastest and largest growing industry - despite our troubled economy! So you're going to be able to leverage the largest and fastest growing industry, the elderly population.

Unfortunately, there is no 3G coverage in my area.

I like this idea, but it would probably require a substantial start-up.

    snow cone/shaved ice boat?

I do that from March-October down here in south carolina (not on a boat though), I'm also right next to a large lake, and three large highschools, middle schools, and elementary schools. Kids love'em and there nice after a long hot day on the lake.

Its also not to expensive to start up, you can get a used ice machine for like $300 and the paper cups by the crate load at places like Wal-mart and Sams, and the flavoring is $5 a bottle and last for about a week or so. Made my money back in about a month and have about a 20k profit by the end of it all. Hoping to get another stand going on the other side of the lake with the profit from last year, and hopefully double the profit.

Fairly cheap to start up, and easy to manage, and you can hire teenagers to run them during the summer as well. and don't limit it to just that, candy, popcorn, snacks, a bunch of possibilities.

Could you possibly rent out jetskis, paddle boats, kayaks, etc? You said that the lake is often filled with people doing these sort of things, so there are probably plenty of people who don't own a jetski or kayak who would want to try it out on the lake anyway.

I would really like to do this idea. The thing is I'm only 17, and this may be a little too much for me to take on for not even being a legal adult yet. This would require me to purchase insurance, etc.

I'm looking for something simple. I really like the snow cone idea! I have another thread on here about the floating convenience store idea I had which is very similar to that.

How about you start a delivery service of sorts. You can advertise yourself as anything anywhere supplier. Just offer your number and when people vacationing on the lake or beach need something (food, supplies, etc) but do not want to leave they can just call you up and you have it delivered to them, land or water!
