Mobile Application Niche

I am in the process of starting a mobile application company. I have found a realitivly undeveloped niche market that, through my research, looks like could make me a nice profit I am looking to cater specifically to the android market.

My concern is this, I feel that by only offering my application on the android platform will allow a rival firm to take the concept of my app and develop it for the apple mobile platform and as a result, since apple holds a larger market share than android does, that I will be over powered by the rival firm and be forced out of the market.

Should I work to develop my application idea for both the android and apple platform, or skip one of the other entirely and accept my decision?
