    MISSING in the INTERNET ?

    Hi,
Such an interesting question - what service or product is missing within the internet?
For example, people want to auction off their stuff - eBay appeared.
They needed to pay and receive payments for it - PayPal.
People wanted to have a virtual yearbook, dating site, pixel sites, etc ... yet what do you think might be still missing out there?

    Thanx!

    Hi,
I really don't think you're going to get a straight answer to that. If anybody here did know the answer I doubt they'd be rushing to tell you...

    Good day.

yeh boss your question is great...but if we knew that answer we would be pursuing it.

You want a big project? Create a search engine comparable to google but people can leave comments under each result.

I agree with the other posters...when folks like us have a great idea, we usually act on it!

Whenever I read those articles about "How'd the next big thing become the next big thing" one commonality always seems to show up: The creators always seem to have devloped the innovation because they themselves (or they and their friends) were looking for a better way to do something they already did (Look at the stories about Craigslist, MySpace, or Google!)

You might want to make a list of things that you do personally or tools that you use and brainstorm innovations that could make those better.

Stay up-to-date with the latest internet technologies and movements and you'll notice an opportunity.

e.g. "web 2.0", content distribution, iptv, podcasts, vidcasts, social networking etc

edit: a good example would be selling movie and music downloads online. If you keep up with the reactions of services like iTunes and Amazon UnBoxed, you will note that the early adopters (the tech savvy people) don't like the restrictions on their media such as DRM etc.

So if you can somehow make a legal, cheap and unrestricted mp3/movie download service... a lot of people will like it.

I great man once said, "Sell what people are already buying." His name was John Reese and yes, he knows what he's talking about.

ok, look...if you wanna do internet startups, there's at least two ways:

    1) Many webs:

The idea of the Internet has evolved. what you're looking at on your screen right now is termed "near-web", but there's also "mobile web" (Internet on phones, in cars, planes, trains etc..) and "far web" (Internet in your living room, cinemas, billboards, shopping centres etc..)

so, take ideas from near web and put them into mobile and far web.

    2) Localisation

Take startups from one country and do a copy in your country.

The point: It's not about "what service or product is missing within the internet?"

It's about what product is not yet available in a particular web and in the particular locality.

Example 1: Real world recommendation engines.

Help local merchants sell more stuff. Design a bit of software that interoperates with the cash register and prints out a list of what the shopper might like based on the contents of her shopping cart, and historical data from the purchases of other people.

That'd be nice. When I buy a pair shoes, I actually want to know where I can get a matching belt, to go with those shoes. If the shopkeeper could print me out a recommendation, I'd probably act on it.

That's a near web (amazon.com) concept applied in far web environment.

    Example 2:

Same story, but something that prints out a list of recipes based on the contents of my shopping cart when I buy groceries. The recommendation to purchase extra ingredients would help a large groceries retailer (woolworths) sell billions more every year.

That's a high potential idea. Do it, and you'll be very wealthy. Again, near web in far web sort of play.

I think that the thing missing from the internet is integration in everyday life. So make it apply to everyday situations and that is the key. Also I think the design and navigation of the internet these days is really so far behind bar a few exceptions. I think we are still at Web 1.5 to be honest.

Social networking has obviously been a major step forward.
Trying to make the internet applicable to shopping, work, education and leisure while simultaneously integrating them all is really key.

If your looking for something more specific, I'd have to say most sites feed us information and leave us with no option to feed it back with anything. I think sites communicate mostly one way. Exceptions are forums like YE of course!

Customisation on sites is important. I like the idea of RSS and sites like www.google.com/ig I think information will be the key as in how it is spread/accessed and rated. Sorry for being so vague but I still believe the internet is in its infancy big time and theres a much deeper potential for the net than how its being used now. U have to remember there are still millions on modems, which is like a dropped anchor in the progression of the web.

C'mon Nado - legal and cheap don't belong in the same sentence.
