Mentors, Mentoring and the whole lot

Hi guys & gals....

Now i've been noticing this trend lately where people... and i mean great capable people who've got solid ideas are looking for mentors.

Now mentors are great and can be very beneficial given the following conditions...

1) You are focused on a particular business idea.

2) You are actively networking with people for specific things.

3) You already have a business and you want to do what it takes to make it better

Now most people seem to look for mentors when they are just starting out... they aren't quite sure what business they want to start but they want to start one none the less. This is fine but to approach someone, seriously and ask for their advice and expertise it usually helps if you've got a business in the works or started.

If you want to be successful then focus on what it is you want to do... this isn't going to happen over nite or like a bolt of lightning... it could come from a crappy job you once held or a dead idea. When starting out you've got to keep it simple stupid... or K.I.S.S. it!

I mean afterall even Warren Buffet started out with a pinball machine business so that just goes to show you that if you are motivated and focused you'll find the help you need to make things happen along the way.... you can't go from A to Z in a single step. Afterall the world wasn't built in a day... neither will your business be built... it takes time.

On Mentoring... now their are business coaches, contacts of friends, associates, and many other ways to get the information you need... you sometimes will need to pay for advice and other times it will be free. But my thinking is just start on a business idea you believe in and go from there... not everyone will see your vision but just do it anyways.

Lastly, i would say don't go looking for mentors till you've started and focused on a business.... its a lot easier and more relevant if you've got something going then if you are just asking questions... that is what these boards are for.

Hello Manish...

I mean getting into business is all well and good but you need a focus to do really well. Most people i've met seem to go into the "I want to get a mentor"... pretty quick. Having real problems a mentor can provide advice on makes a big difference.

Using a site like score.org when you are first starting out will give you access to some professionals who have answers and experience.

Finding a mentor at the onset is difficult because most mentors want to work with someone who has already put in some time and equity. Mentors time is valuable and even though they are willing to teach, they do not want to waste their time.

That's right Karen's got it! Gold Star for you!

I think people forget that mentors are professionals some time. So they are busy enough and they will not help those who aren't helping themselves and have real problems that need fixing. Just my 2 cents
