You’ve heard it before “ location, location, and location”. The importance of choosing your businesses location is as important as the product or service you choose to offer. You have to understand that your location will be important in which customers enter your facility. You have to understand the demographics of what percentage of your target audience is in this location and if it will be worth the time spent in this area.
There are sophisticated methods such as using location analysis tools that assist you in finding location information such as traffic pattern details, demographics, area lifestyle data and competition analysis. These are all helpful pieces of information that you can use to assist you in choosing your business location. If you are a more hands on person or a do-it-yourselfer you can use some resourceful questions when visiting a possible location site.
Before you get your hopes set on a location you’ll want to know is if the site area is zoned for your specific business. Zoning laws can keep people from selling certain merchandise or materials. You will want to talk to the city-licensing department for the full details. After this you will want to review the internal layout of the location. Ask yourself if this is the layout preferable to your business? Consider whether you will need to do any demolition work such as removing walls, windows or other fixtures? Also take in mind if repairs are needed. Are there enough electrical outlets in the right areas or do you need to add additional outlets? Is there a need to rewire anything? Is plumbing an issue? Will you require a public restroom for your customers or wash area for a kitchen? After you have considered these questions concerning the inside then you are ready to move on to the external area of your location.
You will now want to turn your focus on traffic flow and parking space. Assume your customers have to park a block away and weather is disagreeable, they may be forced to choose another shopping location. This forces you to lose business and that’s why providing your customers with adequate parking is a must. If possible look into expanding your space either in front or the rear of your location, whichever you are able. Taking aspects that fully impact your customers can help you to place your business in the most suitable area.
When it comes to the external area of your location, look at the building itself. Does the appearance give off the feel that you are looking into for your business? Will you need to replace, fix or redesign any part of the building? Are you going to have to repaint or change any of the outer fixtures? Is there enough lighting for safety and visibility of an evening? Keeping all of this in mind allows you to make your business location pleasing to the eye and safe for customers to shop at day or night. The over all picture when looking for the right location is putting your customer in the forefront. Take a walk in their shoes to ensure that you make the best location choice that will lead you to business success.
Good Luck!
