    Marketing/Selling software for a company, fair %?

Im going to be building a ground up marketing program for a piece of software owned by a company. The owner of the software has given me 80% cotrol over the direction of the software. I will also be managing some of the users and working as sales/marketing on the program.

This software has never been marketed before and has a pretty good shot for growth. I am going to be getting paid on a % of sales... the question now becomes what % should i propose?

Looking to add 30-50 users this year at $50/mo/user on avg. Thoughts?

btw, im also being paid a "base" of like 2.3k a month to work on this project and i do not have to pay for development expenses.

I don't know how much 2.3K is related to where you live, but I'd say if it is a GOOD base salary (which it would definitely be some places), then you should go for 10-15%. If the base salary is so-so, then I'd go for 30-40%.

We sell products for other companies from time to time, and in that scenario we take 30%, which is quite standard in our part of the globe (Northern Europe). Obviously we don't get anything else from the clients, so as you are getting the base salary you should possibly settle for less (these 10-15%). Again, depends on how good the base salary is compared to where you live.

If it's relatively work-free for you after the sale is closed (in other words, if someone else provides after-sale support), then I would agree that 10% is a fair take.
