    Marketing Careers

    Hey,
I am a senior in HS and have taken some college marketing classes and find it to be very fun and interesting. But, there seems to be so many choices of careers when it comes to marketing. Can you guys give me some careers that deal with marketing and the job description? Thanks!

There are literally hundreds of marketing-oriented jobs out there. It runs the gamut from creative directors at advertising agencies to marketing analysts for major financial institutions.

Basically, with most marketing, you need to pick which side of the fence you want to sit on... If you're the creative type - you'll want to head towards advertising, branding, and graphic design fields. The downside is that these jobs are often so fun that lots of people think they can do it, and it can take many years to get paid well. Advertising firms especially -- right out of college expect to make $30k /year until you've proven your creativity.

The other side of marketing involves basically analytics / number crunching. This is supply side marketing, operations marketing, analysts, etc. This side of marketing is more concerned with evaluating how specific things are going, and take careful review of consumer input and statistical number crunching. Market research firms are constantly in demand, and the pay is much better than on the creative side. The downside is that it's not nearly as glamorous or constantly changing as creative design positions.

The reality is that to succeed in America's marketing environment, you need to have at least a BA in Marketing, Public Relations, Graphic Design, or some related degree. Good luck! There's a lot of fun opportunities in marketing.
