manufacturing question
I have an idea for a new product, but I don't know how I can manufacture it. I could make a prototype by hand but how can I mass produce them without a factory??

Hmm,
I am in the process of doing the same thing, I plan to buy the raw materials and outsource the work, considering putting together the item does not require any large machinery.
But, I am sure you could find a factory to produce your item, or at least the parts, and then you assemble it "yourself"

Tell us a little bit more about this product.
Is it a clothing item, ro soemthing that needs to be sewn?
You could outsource a factory to do it, but depending on the volume that may or may not be a feasable option for you.
Ide be happy to offer any advice, send me a PM.

If I bought the raw materials, then outsourced the manufacturing of the parts, could I assemble the product myself AND put MY brand name on it? I don't want to liscence the idea to another company, but I can't mass manufacture the parts myself. Can I outsource the manufacturing for the parts, but not have to liscence the idea out completely?

Yeh you can there are plenty of companies that will do this you just have to be careful.
Look for contract manufactures

My question is for Nigami .
How do you go abouts finding a manufacturer??
I know a guy that knows factories in china that would mass produce eletronic products for dirt cheap. I have to e-mail him and see if he would tell me the manufactors.
I would like to know ways of finding manufactors outside the U.S that would do a mass production at a good price. How do you find legit ones. I have heard that it's possible to obtain the info from that countries embassay for a list.
I am not sure myself. I am in the works of making a eletronic device and hope to get it mass produced.
I just registered my business name and also business tax id and been looking at wholesellers.

Thanks. I also hope they can also help you about yours. All I have to say if your in the U.S the best thing I know look in china. China usally has the cheapest mass production deals.
I know that in the U.S when you register your own business name and get the business tax id you can ask for a list of wholesellers.
This is what I asked and they faxed me about 6 pages of wholsellers in my area that involve with eletronics.

Ok your right it is very hard to find someone to trust over their and unfortunately there is no easy way to do it. There are a lot of companies that will be based in your home country that can do it for you. When looking for a manufacturer make sure they don’t sell a competing product. Make sure that the tooling moulds are locked up at night to prevent illegal midnight runs. Also have 2 parts of your product manufactured by two completely separate factories/companies and then try and have it assembled in Taiwan or Hong Kong. By doing this it means that no one in china will actually no what the product is. Another way is to fly over their it only costs a few grand and could save you a fortune. Sorry I havnt gone into much detail but I can do later on

I think the first thing you want to do is meet with an industrial design firm that can handle all of your renderings (solidworks is the main program from what I understand but I could be wrong), and your prototype.
Generally, they will also have contacts for molds and overseas manufacturing if that's the route you go. Also, meet with an agent or two that handle all of the dirtywork between the manufacturer in china and getting product to your door, i.e. shipping, customs, quality control.
One thing to keep in mind: depending on what you are manufacturing, it MAY be cheaper to source all of your sub components overseas and do assembly in the U.S. versus having finished, packaged product delivered. Look at shipping costs carefully as it may be the case that you can get 5000 units in a container for $4000 or enough sub components to produce 20,000 units for the same amount. Add to that the assembly cost and associated overhead and come to your own conclusions.
Finally, dont be so quick to dismiss licensing your product. Sometimes it's best to generate a smaller amount on a per unit basis and utilize existing channels of distribution than to try and do it on your own.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
