If you have incoming links to your site then the Search Engines will start to view your site with more respect.

If you have links from good quality sites that are related to your topic then it will definitely help you to build a business.

For sites that are simply hobby site then there probably isn't that much value in link exchanges but if you're really serious about building an online biz then links should definitely be a part of your work ethic.

You can either have a mutual link exchange with another webmaster or you can get one-way links.

Link exchanges are where someone puts a link to your site and you put a link to theirs on an appropriate page.

The best kind of links though are one-way links. You can get these by submitting your site to directories or by writing articles and submitting them to Article Libraries, such as EzineArticles.com. You are allowed to put a live link to your site in the resource box and as these library sites have loads of traffic then your site will benefit from the link.

I have several websites and I get a consistent and steady stream of incoming traffic from articles that I wrote about 4 years ago, so even though it's a bit of work to write the articles it is a long term strategy that does benefit your site. Because people that are searching for your topic found your article, there's a good chance that they'll click on your resource box and go through to your site if they want more information.

If you use a mixture of one-way and mutual link exchanges and add these consistently over a period of months I feel sure that you will see the benefits to your business.

There are other ways of building links, but the two that I've mentioned above are by far the easiest to implement. To help you find people who are in your field of interest and who are actively looking for link exchanges I have found the Value Exchange service from SiteSell to be extremely useful. I'm not allowed to post URLs, but if you Google "value exchange" it comes up as the second choice on the results page.

If you go to that page there's also a free ebook that you can download that gives you a whole slew of linking strategies and explains how each one can benefit your business.

    Hope this helps,

    Lesley
