Managing people can be a daunting task. It needs a lot of patience and understanding from an individual. For first time managers, it is a period when you are not aware of what you want to want to do. You tend to let things get solved without much effort from your side and hope that other employees will understand and let things go too. This is however never the case and you will realize that you need to possess certain management skills to survive in your career.
As a manager you are in a position to change the way an organization works, you have control over your work and a great ability to influence your work environment into what you want it to be. Consequently, as a manager you are required to posses certain abilities. These include the ability to organize, the ability to provide, and the ability to protect your team.
As the organizer, you are an individual who does not dwell on the immediate. Your goals and objectives are not defined to reach certain limits. Instead, you are meant to have the ability to look ahead of the staff. You should have a long-term view of what the organization needs. By looking ahead, you select the most appropriate plan of action the team should take and implement it. You take into account the next tasks you will be performing even before you have accomplished the one you have at hand.
Managers are viewed as providers because they are seen to be able to influence the acquisition of things that no other person in the team can. A manager has the authority to provide information and resources to his or her team. This role is important in management as not every one is able to perform it. To be a good manager you should focus on this management skill to keep your team working.
One other important skill a manager should have is the ability to protect your team. You should be seen as the protector of the team’s interests. For instance, if within the office, teams are being assigned duties, you should ensure that your team is given a responsibility that they are able to handle within the stipulated time frame and within the resources allocated for it.
Management skills, as seen above, play an important role within an organization and should be practiced by every aspiring manager.
