I am starting a Business magazine for the teen/ young adult group. It's going to take a bit to get up and running, but I was wondering if there was anyone with any experience in the area or anything that would like to help.

What type of magazine?, will you be charging or will it be free, what materials will you use, will you print it yourself or will you have a company printed. Will it be in color or black in white, these are some questions you have to know and there is alot more. I started a advertising magazine and i ran into a huge operation. Make sure you have a business plan.

The plan is to run a "test" issue or two after initial surveying. It will be in color, me and my current team are looking at around 30-45 pages max, it will be printed through a printing company. Its a combo magazine so to speak combining Lifestyle, Business Articles about what is happening in the Business world and how it would effect people of the age bracket, Features on Young Entrepreneurs, Business Tips in Planning, Maintaining, Marketing, etc.
I think the value of the magazine is a good idea. Now how many copies of the magazine will you do and will it be free, and if it is free how would you distributed? the reason that i ask is because my setup was mailing out to 20,000 residential houses. so the cost of the printing was like $4,000. also there is 2 types of printing terms, Pre-press and web-press which is more coat effective.

Well the test issues will be free, but after that we will determine a price. We are targeting areas like Universities, Colleges, and Highschools, so thats where a lot of our surveys will got out to. All three of us are currently in Schools of Business at Universities and have ins and experience with the people there to get these distributed, and also know other in the same situations at other schools. I really don't know about your printing terms as we are just formulating the idea and getting to know things step-by-step.
I would attempt to make it a free magazine and pay for it with advertising. There are tons of companies out there who are interested in sponsoring both business related magazines as well as teen related magazines. Try to get a couple of big sponsors, perhaps a large company headquartered in your community, or a company like Pepsi. They are always big supporters (and PR junkies) for a business venture for teens.

Ah... I already tried this idea (just about the same ideas and everything) and its not going to be as easy as it seems as I can tell you, and the fact that Akula brought to mind for me is that not many teens will be interested in this. Surely I would love to get started back to it and prove him wrong, but I realized it takes a bit more then just that throwing articles together, etc. We'll see and if I do take back up on the idea... no competition here, just to clear the air from that.
I see what you are saying Sparks. We already considered the fact that not every teen out there will be dying to read this, We are thinking we have a better chance with college and those select people who have foresight and want to do things while they are young.
^^ I agree with you, who knows, maybe I could possibly assist you in the long run if you'd like. Let me know...
I would love for you to!![]()
Alright... not a problem, we'll talk later down the line when the time is right.
I think its a good idea, you just have to pitch it to the right people, Colleges, forums, you really have to think about a good way to create value to your magazine, for example writing articles about how to start a business guide, or research about young local entrepreneurs that have been successful with a 2 year period, give them a chance to write an article about them. I really feel this is a good potential, you just have to really plan out really good.
Good Luck.

Thank you. And jrod I sese exactly what you are saying. We are taking care not to rush into things and we are planning out things like surveys and to talking to people about the idea and getting random feedback from individuals. We don't want to just throw out another business magazine, we want to throw out a motivational tool hopefully on the monthly basis. Something that shows how smart things can start and how big they can become and the impact that just one idea can have.
