Looking to start an "Extreme Sports League"

In the city I live in, we have a "sports league" that host games like volleyball, soccer, football, etc...
What I was thinking was to create an "extreme" sports league that host games\tournements for skateboarding, frisbee golf, ultimate frisbee, inline skating, etc..... This would be marketed towards the amature athlete and for recreational\competitive fun.
    What do you all think?

well kind of in a way that it involves some of the same sports, but this would be run differently. Each sport would meet say once a week to compete and would have a season that last like 6-8 weeks. After the season is over, the person\team with the most points would win a prize of some sort.

My reccomendation would start a small leaque of maybe three of your favorite sports of your bunch, and do it in two towns. Have them compete eachother. Then, see if anyone else wants to join.

Start the dues at only like $20 per team member

Dont undercut yourself.. Inline Hockey leagues here that run for a few weeks charge over $100 per person, and run every year with many teams and players...

there is a starting price point.. hell for the ice hockey leagues i believe they charge by the team and its $2k or so. The teams organize themselves, and again are full every year.

I would reccomend making friends with some one who runs a non-competing tournament to see how it works (or league) as they can be a bear to run ( my friend runs the inline league), and quite time consuming! (at least find out what they are charging in your area!)

***edited to add: also it seems tournaments tend to be MORE expensive just from my casual observation of radio ads, and through friends... again this is for different sports, and a point to help guide your research into this idea.

I have done several tournaments and things like this. Work backwards to find your price point. Find out what your venues will charge you for facility rental. Don't assume all local parks are free to use. Look at equipment, referees, marketing, prizes, and don't forget insurance. You'll find that things add up quick and to get the price reasonable, you will need good participation.

Steve may be right when he says start small. However, a local soccer club where I used to live hosted a weekend long youth tournament that drew 100 teams. With the club's parents as volunteers for certain duties, they netted $45,000 in one weekend.

I think its a really good idea. Another idea for drawing entrants would be to tap into school rivalries in some way.

Did you make a profit from any of the tournaments? Also, what was insurance like?
