Looking to Sell My Urban Clothing E-commerce Website

    Hello everybody,

I hope this thread is OK to post. I started up an online boutique, where I sell trendy urban clothing. I designed the site myself and I believe that it stands up to the big companies out there (take a look for yourself). Everything in the site is pretty much turn key.

I'm selling because I am going back to school. I don't have time to advertise this business. This website is my baby, so I'm sad to let it go. It has so much potential.

If anyone is interested you can check the site out www.Fresh7.com

    Thank you,
    Ryan

I spoke to Ryan not long ago, and he said asfollows:

    "Hello,

I set up relations with one of the largest online companies in urban clothing. They don't usually dropship but I worked out a deal with the CEO. They then set up a back-end for me to manage orders. I cannot reveal my supplier until I am sure that you will buy my company.

I launched this website only a few months ago. I do not have enough money to spend on advertisement so my main source of traffic is free advertisements (banners that I made) through Myspace.com . The results have been pretty good being that the ads are free, but the site could do a lot much better with more resources.

I do have sales reports in my admin that I can show you, but keep in mind that the company is new. This is pretty much a good start-up business.

Costs for the company are extremely low. I'm basically only paying for monthly web hosting.

The amount that I'm looking for is $15,000.

If you are still interested please contact me back

    Thanks,
    Ryan So
    "

I messaged him back saying I felt he was charging too much for the business, and asked him about margins. He replied with...

    "Hello Steve,

I've recalculated the value of my business and I've decided to lower the price to around $8,500. This would be close to the annual turnover if you kept with the free advertisements (Myspace, etc...).

If you are still interested please e-mail me back.

    Thanks,
    Ryan"

    Hope thats of some help.

It would be good if you can just publish your current sales figures so that peopel can have a calculate of how much your company is worth. Also, does the price include stock? what does it actually include?

Since its such a new company, there wont' be much value in the domain nname and its brand as there would not be many people that knows the company, so I am assuming the price comes from stock being included.

If you dont' want to publish it, maybe you could send me a PM if you're still around

    cheers

    Ryan,

I'd like you to rethink selling the business. The site looks great, you admit you haven't put money into it, but you do have a special relationship with the CEO of your supplier. With a little work you could make this a winner. You're already half way there. You say it's your baby and you're sad to do it. No wonder! You already know this could make enough money for you not to have to worry about money and that's a rare thing.

I suggest you try and make a go of it. Balance school with the work. If work gets SO busy you can't keep-up with school then do school part-time or evenings. I think education is valuable for everybody and I'm not saying to dump school. Not remotely. But what you have here is a seed that needs some nurturing and shows every sign of being big enough to do really well. How many other CEOs will be willing to do what this guy is?

Go back to school, keep the business going. If gets big, like big enough for you to live on the money it generates, and you find school isn't possible then put a hold on school and grow the company. As it grows you'll be able to hand-off responsibilities to employees and, if you're good at nurturing it, you'll be able to give it minimal attention every day so you can finish school at your own pace and still have a business. You may hear all kinds of objections from your parents and friends when then happens but if you know, in your heart, this business has what it takes and you know the market and you just know it's right, then do what's best for YOU, not for THEM. It's not their life you're living, it's yours. Financial independence IS important in life. It's one of the most important, right behind love and health. Wouldn't it be nice to return to school and while everyone else is worried about getting some entry-level position at Meganonymous Corp, you can take your time studying music, and history and economics and business management at your own pace? Want to spend a year abroad? Do it.

One of my best friends came to me about this very thing. His parents, everyone, told him to go to school, don't join the internet startup. Well, opportunity came knocking and against everyone's advice he took the job. He lived carefully and made a lot of money. When the dotcom bust came he lost his job and went back to school.... with about $200,000. in his pocket. He's paying for his school, for 2 years of it abroad in Sweden and France, and he'll still have plenty left over, nearly $100,000, for a downpayment on a house or just to invest.

Something to think about. Think very carefully and follow your own road. It might not work out and if it doesn't then at least you tried and that's an invaluable bit of education.

Jason has got a good point there. It's not their life you're living, its yours. Come to think about it, you could treat this as a positive thing, learning to balance work and school. If you do succeed, great. If you don't, I'm still sure that you've emerge a much stronger person, and that you've gone through stuffs that not many people your age have gone through. Think through it. Good luck!
