wow, i checked out that site you mentioned... seems like a huge rip job:

A Blog Makeover is an affordable way to improve, update, and personalize your blog even if you are using a conventional template. We will completely rework your current theme using new colors, fonts, a new header, and a new footer.

$550 to change fonts, colors, and make a header and footer???

Then you're not really serious about blogging.

your statement might hold more weight if you had an autosignature that shows what you've done. cuz as of right now it looks like you've done nothing which gives your statements zero credibility.

You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to be serious about blogging. You can be serious and spend nothing. I don't see how the two are correlated.

Does anyone actually read this guy John Chow's blog regularly?
I know the title says ramblings of a dot com mogul... but they really do seem like ramblings. It doesn't seem like he provides anything even remotely entertaining, insightful or useful (at least IMO). I just took a quick look at his blog, obviously it is very successful, but I don't really see anything very spectacular about it.

Spending money does directly correspond with being serious about your business where as putting links to sites in a signature of a web forum does not. If you are not willing to spend anything reasonable on your company you are not willing to give your business an opportunity to fulfill it's greatest potential. So instead of writing up a busines plan or taking time to project what funding you might need. You are interested in throwing something up on the net and getting results without doing anything. Well that just doesn't happen.

If you would have done some research you would find that paying 500 - 900 for a blog template is more than reasonable. Most people don't understand that it can take hours to perfectly tune one graphic for a header let along several graphics on several pages. Plus there is of course learning the codex of the blogging site, creating the php functions, the xhtml, and the css needed to run the blog.

If you don't want to spend the money it takes to prepare your site then don't, but don't whine about it being unreasonable to do. Web design and development is a serious business that creates serious results. We (designers) are not sitting in golden made chairs wearing diamond necklaces laughing at people for paying our ridculously high prices.

I was talking about having an aesthecially-pleasing design.

You're not really serious about blogging if you want to resort to one of those freebie WP templates without at least editing it.

I am a regular visitor to his blog.

You can't really take a look at two to three days of blog posts to get a good insight into his blog.

John Chow makes some very informative posts on a variety of Internet-related topics, primarily monetization.

    It's successful for a reason.

Not for nothing, but that design site wanted $500 to change the colors, the font, the header and the footer. I myself could change that stuff, and they want $500 to change my color from #FFFFFF to #000000. It is unreasonable? I think so.
For blogging all the designer does is create a css template (a single template). A static template. How long that does that? Wordpress is doing all the heavy work and that CMS is Free. I have no problem paying someone $20/hour on ODesk, but at $20/hour I don't see it taking 25 hours to change colors, fonts, header and footer which brings me to the conclusion that they are overcharging. So if you'd like to justify that price tag to me feel free.

and FYI: i have done research in hiring people. i've paid between $15 to $20 an hour for programmers to create scripts for me, and i consider this to be more valuable then template design. a great programmer is much more valuable then a great template design person. the car could look pretty as pie, but without the engine it ain't taking you anywhere.

this article lists the top 30 most popular blogs on the internet:

    http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/popular-blogs.html

What is funny is that all of them aren't these shiny diamond looking sites, yet they are all in the top 30. Content is king and you don't know what you're talking about.
