Logos and Letterhead

My partner and I are at that "corporate" identity stage (and I use the term corporate, loosely). We need a logo and letterhead. How did most of you go about that?

Did you invest in a copy of Adobe Illustrator and go to work?
Did you utilize friends and family?
Did you pay a graphic design student? If so, how much?
Did you pay professionals? If so, how much?

We've done some research but we're not sure which way to go and if it even matters, especially for online businesses where logos are not as significant as those that are offline. Yet it helps with branding and advertising and helps define the strategy behind these areas.
