I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about Search Engine Optimization and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years.

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

what business are you involved in? i suppose alot of it depends on your competition.

My business offers optimised websites(basic), may be an idea for you, you could link it to your existing site if all is well.

First, show us the site please. I don't know why people ask questions about their sites but then don't link to them. If you know anything about Search Engine Optimization at all, then you will understand that knowing your site's theme/keywords can help us give better advice.

That being said, and without seeing your site.... there isn't much help I can offer, but you may want to try this very general advice:

My uncle owns this business in Jacksonville, FL : Vehicle Wraps Jacksonville Cutting Edge Vehicle Wraps and Fleet Advertising this link is actually a landing page on a seperate domain (rigwraps.com) that directs the viewer to his main site atlanticimaging.com, but it will do for this demonstration.....

Look at the site closely, you will likely not scroll down far enough to point out what I'm showing you. Notice the paragraph of text and the links that exist at the bottom of the page, far enough down that most people won't even notice it's there. I have no idea if this is still working for him as he did it a year or so ago, and we all know how much Google likes to change, but a quick search I just did shows that it is still working

So you will notice that he has included many "key" words in there several times, almost to the point that the paragraph appears to be gibberish. If you read it, it actually is gibberish, just a bunch of random sentences.... but these sentences have the KEY words he is trying to promote in them many times, as well as geographic KEYWORDS to link his 'theme' keywords to his location keywords 'Jacksonville', 'Florida' etc..

What this does for the search engines is gives him very good results for local searches that might pertain to his business.... "Jacksonville Rig Wrap" he is the first result "Florida Rig Wrap" he is the 2nd result, and so on for his other keywords "imaging", "printing" etc...

The links are there in theory as local backlinks, as most of them are local Fishing businesses, although I'm not sure how they play into the Search Engine Optimization since they nearly all pertain to Ocean fishing and not graphic design/imaging. I think the key role they play is linking his site to other sites in the geographic region?

Anyways, I thought I'd show you this because there isn't a lot of Search Engine Optimization that is done in the open like this anymore, and it should be a good example to generate some ideas... you can SEE the keywords he put at the bottom and then go to Google and search to see how they affect different searches... check it out


Also, you need to keep in mind that it takes time for the engines to crawl your site, so updates you make may not be reflected in the search engines for anywhere from a few days to months, depending on the popularity of your site.

ah just realized the other reason for the Fishing links, many of the sites linked at the bottom (all those links are reciprical) are high ranking for the keywords "Rig" (boats have 'rigs' ) and the geographic location (Jax, FL), so by linking to them and getting links to his page on theirs, he improves his SE rank

Hello, I am getting you very well..

There’re so many factors: on page: keyword in title, link text, in bold, link text from back links, size of your site, frequency of updating your site..
Or Have a look at Organic Search Engine Optimization in my sign that for some more tips. The main thing is that seems to work is getting you to top from other sites to help you rank well.
