    Because she has got great talent PLUS her appearance doesn't caress people's eyes.

    Its THIS COMBINATION that made her popular; missing either one of this wouldn't have made her what she is now

    Twitter's success is a bit puzzling to me as well - again, it could be its 'innovative simplistic' way of interacting with people....

    I am not a fan of twitter so not sure. But it's the uniqueness that makes things or people popular.

    Ebay was unique
    Google was unique
    Twitter might have been unique
    Microsoft was unique
    etc.

    There are a few triggers that can get people to share or spread your videos, products or ideas. For example, videos that inflict fear, inspiration (Susan Boyle), disgust, humor, thrill, mind boggling, etc prompts viewers to share.

    People do talk about quality products or services as well as innovation or new ways of doing things (example: Twitter for communication).
