    Laptop Or Desktop?

I know this isnt business related, but I just got a check for $500, and I have a good amount of money in the bank. I use my parents laptop and our home desktop pc now. But im looking to get my own computer. I really like laptops because I can use them whereever. And desktops are cheaper. So should I get a laptop, desktop, or neither? Which do you use? All input greatly appreciated.

I personally would say laptop, and MacBook Pro. hmm

It is much more expensive than a conventional laptop. But for what I need it for, web development with Ruby on Rails, it's perfect.

Depends if you need it to be portable. Obviously you'd go the laptop if you did.

I'd also suggest acquiring a large screen, 19" LCD would do the trick. I'm not a fan of the 15.4" laptop screen when working at a desk.

Well personally i'd say a Laptop, though that may be for a novelty factor.
If you will need it 'on the go', then a laptop's a great idea, also if you're a student, again laptop..

If it's for business etc, laptop seems a more preferable choice due to flexabilitys..
If you're going to use it in a single place, and require a more powerful setup then a desktop would be a better choice.

Well, I personally have both- but let me tell you, it sucks having 1/2 of your business data on one, and 1/2 on the other. What I am probably going to be doing is getting a powerful "small factor" laptop to use (~10"-12") for business and travel, and then getting a docking station for in-the-office use. This will give me the best of both worlds- portablity and a decent office set up. All I have to do it plug the laptop into the docking station (somewhere in a drawer or out of the way), and then I can simply use a big 24" Hi-Def LCD Screen, wireless mouse/keyboard, and external DVDRW & HDD drives.

If you need just a hint of portability go with the laptop. I found out the hardway lugging a desktop around when you are a student is quite simply a pain.

I have a laptop and if your at uni or something then obviously ,but i have a laptop that cost £1000 and i never take it anywhere. So for that money i could have got a desktop for less and a better one at that.So it depends what you need it for. What do you need it for?

I currently use my parents laptop around the house and if we go anywhere, sometimes I like to bring it. I enjoy the portability, but they're more expensive. I think im going to go with a laptop. Thanks guys.

i would go with a laptop, because you can take it everywhere, and their becoming more and more powerful and smaller and able to replace desktops! i will never go back to a desktop, i don't see the need.

Btw if you're going to laptop, check out
    http://zepto.com/country/default.aspx
They make the best laptops in the world... and they're reasonabley priced too.. Here's an example:

Here's around the best laptop I could make with them.

    Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG 54Mbit
    Keyboard Znote 6x15W Black UK
    SAMSUNG DVD-RW DL
    15,4" WSXGA+ 1680x1050 - 6625WD
    6 Cell Battery
    NVIDIA® Geforce 8600M GT
    2.40 GHz Intel® Core™2 Duo T7700 800MHz
    4 GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC5300 Original Zepto
    250GB SATA 2,5" 5400PRM – SAMSUNG
    Microsoft® Windows® Vista Home Premium - UK

    All that for £1,286!

Baring in mind that's a top of the line laptop, for a budget around $1000 you should be able to get a very nice spec laptop!

    Good luck

Laptop, when it comes to portability.
Desktop, when it comes to affordability.
It depends on the specs which one is more powerful.

But of course, I would suggest Laptop with a great specs.
