When I start my job this summer, I will be donating in $20 intervals. America has the best people and kiva.org is a perfect example of our generosity.

sounds dodgey to me... i'd rather hand deliver my money to a close friend who needs it or give part of it to a bum...there are already so many people in my vicinty to help out, why start in another continent?

I was reading about Micro-loans awhile ago.

They are supposed to be fairly safe, and yes you get to have that little tingly 'good' feeling.

Why they are good, the people who receive these loans are very dedicated to what they are receiving the money for. Look at prosper, 1/2 the loans there are for people trying to dig themselves out of debt, or want the money to re-invest in prosper (ya I know is a bad idea).

These loans go to people who want to, for example start a hot-dog stand... They are looking to make their entire livelihood off the money you give them.

I do not believe the loans themselves are dodgy, however I would do some checking into the company (Kiva in this case)

Anyone have experience with Kiva, you get your investment back? As much as I would like to donate my money to a good cause, I'm not that rich

No offense. But why should we help someone in another country when there are plenty of people in OUR OWN country who can use the help just as much!

You live in the land of oppertunity where as they don't. It's up to you how you spend you money but people might want to send it to them because no only will you helping these indivduals but you will also be helping the 3rd world as a whole.

YidBiz, go ahead and help people in your own country then. However compare the opportunities from an investment stand point. Kiva currently is boasting 100% repayment rate. Prosper on the other hand has $200,000 worth of loans in default. So, possibly the people in that other country are more serious about accepting our help and respecting it. Of course its a completely different ball park if you are just going to donate to a charity with no return.

people in our country have so many opportunities and do not relise how good we've got it. More than 95% of all loans are repaid, and you donate in $25 intervals. If you dont want to help, thats your perrogitive. Lets not make this a polital debate guys.
