Kickstarter - Is crowd funding possible?

Hi there -

I know you don't know me but we do share something in common -- we all have the entrepreneurial spirit. That's not something everyone has or even understands. You know how much hard work and dedication starting a company takes, so that's why I'm asking for your help. For the past nine months I've been building my company, completely funding it myself. I'm about to launch but don't have the budget left to purchase the rest of the inventory I need to *successfully* launch. When Diaspora was getting all the hype from raising $200k via Kickstarter, I decided to look into it. Since I've come so far without seeking investors, I didn't want have to go that route just yet and decided to give Kickstarter a shot.

As an entrepreneur you know my pain. My minimum pledge is $10, I know times are tough but please consider helping a fellow entrepreneur out. That's like giving up 3 Starbucks :) If I don't make my goal, I don't get anything (and no one gets charged either). You might ask why I made my goal so high. Well, when I ran the numbers that's the amount I needed in order to get the inventory I need.

How does kickstarter work? Do I just go and pledge $10 or more and once your goal is achieved the money is released to you?
