    Jewelry Business?

I've always loved jewelry and I have always been a crafty person and I would love to get into the jewelry business. I came up with a couple of designs that I would love to produce, but unfortunatly I currently do not have the resources and tools to produce them "In house." I found a company in India on Alibaba.com that can produce them for me, but Im a bit scared since they are overseas, is anybody doing or has anybody done something similar to this? Im all ears if anyone has any good advice for me, thanks!

I have no experience making jewelry I do how ever sell raw jewels at one of my live government auctions. Most of the items come from asset liquidation sales. They usually sell for 10% of appraised value. I have one item coming up for sale next week.

22.50ST lot of Rubies Appraised at $33K priced to sell at $3500

Not sure if you are looking for anything like this.

thanks roger, raw gems/stones is something I would definantley need in the future, but what Im actually looking for is a manufacturer that can produce jewelry pieces that I design, then I can sell it on my website and to small boutiques. Thats basically the plan, so if anyone has any information about this or something similar to this, please share, I'd greatly appreciate it

To do this you will have to have prototypes made. You can find a local jeweler to do that. Once you have a few pieces then you will have something to sell to the designers.

Post production, you may want to explore a 3PL to handle the receipt and distribution of your goods. My company specializes in this type of activity. If you need additional information on our services, feel free to contact me and we can discuss our capabilities.

I don't want to stomp on your dreams but please carefully research your market before you invest in something like this. You're talking about getting into an extremely saturated business so your biggest challenge is going to be marketing. You will have tons of competition from large and small companies so you'll need to either develop something unique or you'll need some really clever well thought out marketing.

Do a search of jewelry companies online and see how many there are. What are their price points, how are they advertising, who are they targeting as customers, etc? Think about what you're going to do compete with these guys before you look into production.

I think the best way to start is to make the jewelry yourself and sell to local friends and family. Ask them to tell their friends about your services and expand from there. Definitely using personal contacts will take you a lot farther than just jumping into the saturated market, especially online. However, if you create some demand and get some testimonials on your products first you'll have an easier time when you move to a wider audience.

I agree with meaghannf that the best way to start off is to make the jewellery yourself. That way, you're in a niche market of handmade products and people are more likely to buy them as oppose to mass produced jewelleries. Customers like one off pieces and see more value in them and willing to pay a bit more too.

Have a look at sites like Etsy. There are a lot of people who are doing very well just from selling their handmade pieces on the site. It's a good starting point.

    Good luck!

I always wondered about these handmade. Ok they are handmade but that same jeweler usually makes lots of the same design. So where is that extra value to the customer? Meaning why should I buy "handmade" engagement ring instead of "mass produced" ?
