Is starting a business at a young age a WISE or HASTY move?

    Hi all,

I recently wrote an article in my blog about starting business at a young age and how this decision can be a turning point in your life.

I will like share this thought with u all, experienced and budding entrepreneurs out there. Is starting a business at a young age a WISE or HASTY move?

Please give me some comments, suggestions or share your thoughts on this.

    Thanks a lot!

    Andrew

Here's a part of the article for you to refer to.

    From http://bizportal101.blogspot.com/200...ess-young.html

    Start Your Business Young
There Is No Such Thing As A Right Age

A personal dilemma, a life changing decision. Is there a right age to venture into the Business World? An encounter with experienced entrepreneurs and businessmen revealed their perspective towards this thought.

Developing undiscovered innovations, getting a head start on competitors and tapping on untapped lucrative market are the definite ideals for all entrepreneurs. Many experienced entrepreneurs I met have lots to say about starting a business when you are mentally young and physically charged. In fact, they all agreed vehemently on one thing.

"If you have a business idea in mind, go ahead and do it. Start young. Don't let competitors wrest control over your success because of your preposterous hesitation and indecisiveness."

Starting a business young while undergoing tertiary education or even at the age of 17-18 - Is this a smart move or would you rather consider this a hasty decision? I would say no to the latter. Certainly, sacrifices are necessary when you decide to shove aside your obligations and commit yourself fully to achieving your entrepreneurial desires. Your academic results drop, you lose focus in study and eventually you face a dilemma of being a school drop-out.

Especially at a fresh young age, it is the society's expectation for you to take on conventional way of life - receiving a prestigious scholarship, graduating with Honors in a top-notch university, getting a professional job and earning high salaries. For years, this cycle has been the norm and all of us are expected to obediently abide by this norm. However if you are a budding entrepreneur, who has a strong passion for business and has big dreams which you want to achieve in the business world, must you follow the footstep of the rest of your peers who has interest in other fields? Why not get into the real world straight where your interest truly lies, experience yourself and feel happy for what you are doing.

My thoughts are this: younger people have more open minds, are willing (and able) to take greater risks (that may not even seem like risks), and are not afraid to dream big. Youth is the optimal time to launch a new business. It may fail - but even if it does, the learning experience is priceless.

Never too young - entrepreneurs will usually end up starting and closing a wide variety of businesses. Better to start early.
If you want to be rich, sell products and services.
If you want to be insanely rich, create and control markets.

I think it is wise to start a business or put 100% to fight for future at a young age. At a young age, you can take more risks and have more energy to stand up from any falls and mistakes.

I started my first business at 16. It wasn't successful, but I did learn a lot about starting and running a business.

The experience, in itself, was worth it. Take a shot... sometimes the only way to learn is to jump in and get your feet wet. Just understand that you will need to learn some things that take time.

As you said, the experience focuses a young entrepreneur's mind on the things he/she will need to do to be successful financially. I knew very early that the conventional career path was not the best fit for me, and began preparing accordingly.

Also, reputation and connections will become very important. A young person running a small business can easily find a mentor. Later in life, this will become more difficult. If a young person takes the time and effort to develop his/her skills and isn't just looking for easy money, it can be a very valuable experience regardless as to whether the business is viable or not.

For me, nothing wrong with how young or old you are in starting a business. Though there's an advantage when you start young because you are able to save for the future earlier.

It's how you are eager to learn and be good at what you do. And work to be successful.

Start young - by starting at a business at, say, 25 years old instead of 18 years old, what advantage have you gained? None at all. Of course, you may have done a degree or something similar at university by the time you're 25 and learnt about business, but actual hands-on experience in the world of business is more important than any qualifications.

When your young...you've got nothing to lose...

    Go for it!

Find those who have done it before, pick their brain and follow their lead!

Mentors are cruical to your success as I spoke about in one of my past blog posts http://scottgbradley.blogspot.com/20...hout-them.html

Just take some action! You have nothing to lose, and no other "things" to worry about...kids, family, wife...etc
